The sixty-first report of the Diocesan Boys' School and Or- phanage states, in' part:—
The most important event of the year 1929 was the sixtieth birthday commemoration which was held from November 2 to
November 5. We are very thank+ ful to His Excellency the Gov- ernor Sir Ceell Clementi, K.C.M.G., .for his interesting speech on that | occasion. His Excellency, referred to the fact that, through no fault of its own, the school lost no less than $173,000 as a result of the strike-boycott in 1925. As will bo scen from a statement on finance the school is in a very serious position financially and cannot be expected to make pro-

The School owes a great debt of thanks to Mr. E. Stephens of Chatham, England, for a gener- ous donation of £1,000. Mr. Stephens is a nephew of the late Mr. M. 3. D. Stophone, an old re- sident of Hong Kong.
On behalf of the staff, the scholars and myself, I heartily thank the Chairman and the Com- mittee for their very willing sup- port given throughout the year.
As head master, I feel that, in fairness to the staff, I must men- tion that the salaries for the Home and local staffa are those fixed in 1919 to 1922. The Home staff is paid at a two shilling dollar and has received no com- pensation for loss in exchange and for the highest cost of liv ing the pension scheme is inade quate and the school has never been able to afford a second mar- ried master on the staff.
