DEFEAT FOR IRISH AMERICAN CONSUL DEATH PENTY ON

GOVERNMENT

DE VALERA MAY SUCCEED COSGRAVE AS PRESIDENT

IN POWER SINCE 1923

Rugby, Yesterday. The Irish Free State Government was defeated by 66 votes to 64 in the Dall last night on a Bill extending the old age pensions introduced by the Du Valera Party. The Bill was opposed by the Government on the ground that it would involve an extra cost of from £250,000 to £300,000 yearly. The Bill was supported by the Labour Party and some Independents.

To-day Mr. Cosgrave, President of the Executivo, announced at a brief meeting of the Dail that the Government would resign jand, on his motion, the Datl adjourned until next Wednesday, when it will proceed with the election of a President. Conne Gerald O'Kelly, who acts as fleader of the De Valera Party in the ab- sence of De Valera, who is on his way home from America, said that his party was prepared to nominate De Valera as President. The general belief in Dublin is that De Valera will be des feated and Cosgrave re-elected. President Cosgrave was elected to the Presidency in 1922 and re-elected in 1027-British Wireless Service,
