RACING
President Hall's Narrow Win
SOME GOOD TIMES
THE CHINA
Thrilling finishes and fast times were the order of the day at the Second Extra Race Meeting at Happy Valley on Saturday,
The delightful weather tempted a large crowd to the course, In spite of a number of counter-attractions. They had their reward in seeing some most exelting racing as, after a dead-hent in the Arst race, no fewer than four of the remaining nine were decided by the narrowest of margins.
The biggest thrill of the day came in the First Aggregate Stakes, when Prealdent Hall, an overwhelming favourite, only just got home a short head in front of Royal Flush who would probably have won in another few yards. As it was, there was considerable doubt until the numbers wore holatod. The rellet of punters was expressed in no inaudible manner when the re- sult was made known!
Mr. Heard rode wonderfully well here, in spite of the severe handi- cap of losing a stirrup iron.
Lobster Bay Comes In Lobster Bay. In the next race, snatched a victory from Witty Stag by a head. The pair were evenly backed, and Lobster Bay pleased his supporters by paying $12 for a win.
Pagoda (Mr. Harriman up) pald the biggest dividend of the meeting in the sixth race, when he won from Shanghai Beau, another out- |sider, to pay $120.40. Sunloch, who was extensively tipped, came in a poor fourth here
African Eve and Four Clubs both paid well after their dead-heat in the first race, African Eve incident- ally providing Mrs. W. T. Southorð with her first win, which was very popular with the crowd.
Iron Blood paid a nice $32.30 in the next race, although some of the "wise ones" were not exactly sur prised at his performance.
Piccy, in the seventh race, paid vut $35,90, and in the last event of the day, Done Again, who will bear watching, paid his backers $55 for a place.
Excellent Times
Times generally were excellent. In the first race 2 mins. 02.2/5 was was returned, which, it may be noted, equalled the record for the mile which had stood for 14 years until Apollo put up a new mark of 1 min. 59.1/5 secs, at the recent Annual Meeting.
Later in the afternoon President Hall came in, in 2 mins. 02 sece.
Riding honours were well dlvid- ed, Lieut.-Commander Bulteel hay- ing three winners (including a dead-hent) and a third, and Mr. A. J. P. Heard two firsts, two seconds, and two thirds, to take chief honours.
