tion to the deepening of the chan, NAVAL CONFERENCE nel to 40 ft. and widening to 1,000 ft. Bir. R. E. V. James, of the James Drodging, Towage and Transport Co., Ltd., had inquired if the board would be prepared to

consider any further dredging, as

he would not be able to continue the dredging for the Southern Railway Co. for about 12 months, and his float of dredgers, hoppers, and men would have to close down unless some employment could be found for them. Mr. James sald to quote he would be prepared very favourable terms for carry ing out the deepening and widen ing of the channel forthwith. Ho would do it for 28. per cubic yard in alta provided the work was about the same amount inside the outside, was and outside, as very heavy, especially at this time He had been over the area, and according to his es- timate there were about five and a quarter miles to dredge, and the quantity of material in situ was about 6,500,000 yards, which ha thought represented an eight years' contract,

of the year.

Mr. James WOR informed that the board could not contemplate at present the whole scheme, but the committee were prepared to consider the widening to 1,000 of the feet of the upper part channel at Hythe Knock and Netley Shoal. Mr. James was willing to undertake that at the rate mentioned, and agreed that the payment should be spread

The whole point was as to how the board would be affected. They had already passed A 16- solution that ultimately they should deepen, the channel to a depth of 40 ft. throughout, and to widen it to 1,000 ft. throughout. That scheme would cost some. thing approaching three-quarters of a million pounds, and obvious- ly it was a scheme which could not be embarked on without very considerable help.
