PATHETIC SCENE IN COURT
MOTHER GOES TO PRISON: BABY CRIES
ILLICIT OPIUM CHARGE
A very pathetic scene was enact- ed in the Central Magistracy this morning. A Chinese woman, after her trial, was being led to jail, and as she passed by, her infant child who was in the arms of another woman. cried out "Mamms, mamma," and stretched forth two small arms to embrace her. The mother cried bitterly, and the constable led her along without al- lowing her to see her child.
The woman, Wong Sul-ying, about 25 years of age, was charged with the illicit possession of 14 taels of non-Government opium. She pleaded guilty and asked for
ment's proposals, and declared that Dr. Cook to Be Released mitigation of sentence, pointing out
collaboration which was going to be established with the League would
be certainly as close as it would be fruitful.-Reuter.

A Mythical Seaman? In reply to the Magistrate, she said that she kept the opiam for a seaman because she wanted the money. The man had promised her $30.
Revenue Officer Grimmitt said that her story could not be true. Her house was honeycombed with hiding places-the, sort that one would expect to find in an opium divan. He first of all discovered
when asked if there was more, the seven teels of the contraband and,
woman replied in the negative. ́A further search in the kitchen brought to light another seven taela.
The Magistrate imposed a fire of $1,500 or six months' imprison- ment.
