Tune Now Pessimistic Very different is the tune which is being played to-day. The aver- age price for the year turns out to have been well under 11d. instead of 18. 3d. and while many companies, to the earprise of their friends and foes alike, have managed to pay "medest dividends" they have in some uses had to draw upon their in order to do so. This will mean an addition of 110,000 tons to world stocks, which will in- crease them, at the reduced rate of consumption, to more than half a year's supply.

Experts Completely Wrong
No wonder the experts are de- pressed. Apart from any special interests they may have in the commodity it must be mortifying to have to admit that they were so completely wrong in their forecasts. They were quite positive for exam- ple that Malaya neither would nor could export more than 325,000 tona in 1029. Actually the net exports of Malayan rubber amounted to 416,000 tons-91,000 tons above the estimate. It would thus appear, from the Times of Ceylon review of the year, that Malaya, and not the sative planters of Java and of the Sumatra, was the villain plece. Production was, as near 48 can be reckoned, 375,000 tons, while consumption was only 794,000 tons relatively slow development of a difference of 81,000 tons. Now British Empire trade during these if Malaya had only produced the two years is attributed largely to quantity she was expected to, con- sumption would have overtaken pro- the contraction of the trade induction, as it ought to have, and Australia and to the low prices instead of prices tending down for crude rubber.
