ON POISONS

("Poisons," by J. T. J. Morrison, M.A., M.Sc., M.B., F.R.C.S., Professor of Forensic Medi cine and Toxicology in the { University of Birmingham; Library. Benn's Sixpenny London.]

This excellent little book gives very graphic description of polsons, dealing with the his- torical aspect; how they act; the symptoms and treatment; the cor- rosives; arsenic and other in- organic irritants; vegetable poi sons; alcohol and carbon com- pounds; gaseous poisons; food poisons: together with an appen- dix and bibliography.

Dr. Morrison says that in the popular sense a poison is a sub-1 stance which is capable, in small doses of harmful OF deadly effects; but there are recognised polsons which are only fatal in large doses, and after all, the question of large or small is re- lative. Orfila is quoted as hav- ing said in A.D. 1814, "Of all the branches of medicine, the study of toxicology is that which excites the most general interest. The naturalist examines the varied forms of poisons and arrives at method of pointing them out. The physiologist seeks to explain their mode of action. The phy sician directs his attention to the search of means capable of des- troying their action. The chem- ist brings to perfection the pro- cess necessary to enlighten the magistrate whose duty it is to punish the guilty. The private in- dividual is fond of discoursing on the properties of polsons; he never ceases to deplore the fate of the victims of negligence or mistake, and to feel for the un- happy wretches whom despair has hurried on to suicide; Incensed
