PORT SAID SWINDLERS: HOW TOURISTS ARE DUPED

WORTHLESS RUBBISH

The traveller going East is often tempted to buy rare stamps in the bazaars and from native hawkera, writes Mr. F. J. Melville in the Daily Telegraph, If you know nothing of stamps they are best left alone, for the traveller who buys rare sets to send home, thinking to

give joy to a collector friend, will most likely be sending worthless rubbish, if Hot actual forgeries. This applies to stamps offered to tourists all the way from Port Said to Tokyo, though at most places. there are established stamp dealers of reputation from whom the novice may expect to receive fair treat-

The stamps, which had been lithographed in Paris in ample quantities, in sheets of 120, were disposed of to the stamp trade, and for many years wore plentiful and cheap. But the collectors' demand for used copies led to the applica- tion of fictitious postmarks.

I have had undoubted used copies of the 20 centimes on original let- ters; generally the stamp is only pen-cancelled, but occasionally they come with the postmark of the French post office at Port Said, which consists of the number 5,129 in a lozenge-shaped group of dots, and more seldom with 5,105, the index number of the French poat office in Suez. Letters exist with the Canal stamp used in conjunc- tion with the contemporary Egypt- lan stamp.

Forgers' Omissions Although the original unusued stampa were almost a drug on the market until quite recent times, the stamps were counterfeited within a year, or two of their issue. I hayo Giroux, Lloydiano, from Shang-seen eight or nine distinct sets of hai, North.
