A Chinese married woman charged at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday before Mr. T. S Whyte- Smith for B-treating her mui tsai. According to the prosecution, which was conducted by Mr. H. R. Butters, of the Secretariat for Chinese Affairs, the woman was most heartless and brutal in her treatment of the unfor tunate girl.

Mr. J. M. Remedios appeared for the defondant and entered a plea of not guilty.

Home

The evidence showed that the girl, who was only 12 years of age, was taken to the Shamshuipo Police Sta tion by a constable who had found har hiding herself in the stairway of a house. The girl alleged that she had often been beaten by her mistress and that she was afraid to go home because she had delayed in carrying water. A Chinese detective was sent to interrogate the defendant' who ad- mitted that she had eaned the girl. Defendant refused to go to the Pollco Station to claim the girl and ́she was accordingly sent to the Po Leung Kuk, Later she was sent to the Government Civil Hospital to be medically examined by Dr. Thomas, who found that the girl bore no fewer than twenty weala caused by a carte Around her wrists" were marks which were consistent of her having been bound with a rope.

Defendant admitted that she had boaten the mui tsai but that was bo cause she had stolen some porridge from a neighbour. She added that she would havo chastised hor own child in like manner had she been guilty of theft,
