MORE ORDERS FOR THE CLYDE
WORKS WELL EMPLOYED
all
Orders for new tonnage have gone to upper reach yards and at the establishmenta involved there is suf- Solent work on hand to keep them well employed for considerable time ahead.
The order which it is reported has been placed with Mesara. Alexander Stephen and Sons is for two largo cargo motorships for, the New Zea land Shipping Company, the order for the third vessel having gono to an English Arm, Being purely cargu ships, these vessels are not nearly so large as those composing the group of three motor passanger and cargo ships which Mossrs. John Brown and Co. are at present completing for the New Zealand Company and Federal Steam Navigation Company, This group, of which the "Rangitik!" is already on service and the "Rangit- ane" and the "Rangitata" are being Atted out, are all vessels of about 17,000 tons gross, whereas the two Vensela which Messrs. A. Stephen and Sons are to build will be about 9,000 tene gresk.
the
The two groups will also be diff. erent in so far as their machinery installations are concerned.
The three passenger and cargo ships built at Clydebank are fitted with Brown-
Sulzer Diesel engines, while the three for which orders have now been placed will each be fitted with a different
type of engine. Of the two to be
built on the Clyde, it is understood that one will have Doxford type of engines, and one the Sulzer type, and that the English-built ship will have Vickers-M.A.N. engines.
New Cargo Steamers No Clyde shipowning firm has made such large additions to their fleet, as have Messrs. H. Hogarth and Sons.
The cargo
steamer which Messrs. Napier and Miller launched for this firm recently is the twenty- ninth vessel walch Meas. Hogarth have had built since the tordination of the war. It may be noted also that the "Baron Polwarth," launched from the Old Kilpatrick just yard. is the teath vessel built there for Messrs. Hogarth.
