Among those present were Right Rev. Bishop Valtorta, Mr. E. Ralphs, Hon. Sir Shou-son Chow, Mr. D. W. Tratman, Mr. Sum Pak-ming, J.P., Professor C. A. Middleton Smith, Captain E. B. Deakin, Mr. A. R. Sutherland, Rev. Mr. H. R. Wells, O.B.E., and Mr. T. N. Chau, J.P.
Great Ability following the dinner, which con- sisted principally of Chinese food, the Right Rev. Bishop Valtorta Bald that it seemed to him but yesterday that Mr. Taui came to his predecessor and Father Maria asking their support for a scheme regarding a school which he was proposing to start. That support. was very readily given, but they never thought that the School was going to grow so much, Mr. Tsui, he was glad to say, had been ex- tremely successful, and that was due to his great ability, to his great work, and to his great luck. He had been very lucky in find- ing very great help from the Gov- ernment, and also in earning the goodwill of their friend, Mr. Ralphe. He had also been very lucky in being able to extend the school premises on all sides, sur- mounting much that was difficult in a dificult, alte. With the Col- loge bursting through its limits, I he had also been able to find a safety valve in the Wah Yan Col- lege Branch at Kowloon. (Laugh- ter.)
Concluding, Bishop Valtorta asked the gathering to join with him in congratulating Mr. Tsui and his statt for their work and wishing every success for the future of the College. (Ap- plause.)
The Founder's Speech Mr. Peter Tsui, replying, said: I thank you all for honouring us with your presence this evening to join us in celebrating the Tenth Anniversary of the foundation of the Wah Yan College.
There is a common saying which applies to me: "When a man has nothing to do he becomes a school- master, and when a schoolmaster has nothing to do he becomes the founder of a school." My only claim to take this chair this oven- ing Hes in the fact that I founded: the Wah Yan College, ten years: ago to-day.
The Wah Yan College had its. cradle at No. 60, Hollywood Road, consisting of one flat, one teacher and four boys. At the end of one year the number of pupils went up to 190 occupying four flats. In 1921 a proper school building at Robin- son Road was rented and the num ber on roll was 400. In 1924 a branch was opened at Kowloon. Gradually there was an increase in both pupile and teachers, and now there are 800 boys, including 100 boarders, on this side and 300 on the mainland, and, a staff of 45, To accommodate this number we have to occupy the St. Joseph's Mansion and the Wah Yan College Building at Robinson Road, and the Wah Yan College Kowloon Branch Building at Nelson Street, Kowloon.
