SHORT LINE
[From A Chinese Military Correspondent]
Now that results have panned out in their favour, the military geniuses in Canton declare that their retreat for about 200 miles was according to plan, so that they defeated the Ironsides exactly where they had intended to and that everything came off in accordance with the tactics laid down.
There appears to be some ground for saying this. No resist- ance was offered to the Ironsides when they entered Kwangtung from the north-west. At first the Cantonese did not feel over- confident. But when reinforcements arrived from the North, they continued to fall back.
Rumours were whispered that the Cantonese and their friends from the North did see eye to eye. The supposed lack of cohesion was said to have caused the defenders into dropping back without firing a shot. When the real trial of strength came, the loyalists. surprisingly not only held their ground but counter-attacked to good purpose.

ANOTHER USEFUL ARTERY Leading northward out of Canton was the Kwangtung section of the Canton Hankow Railway. This was another vitally useful artery in the Cantonese defence system.
Realising that it was hopeless at- tempting to drive down the railway, the Ironsides pushed to the north- east of Canton and struck from there. Canton's leaders made use of a motor 'bus route and rushed aufficient troops up to stem the tide. On paper, at least, the Ironsides (who originally comprised all Cantonese from the south of Kwang- tung province) were the better fighters. Yet they failed to carry the day. :,,1
