Behind the Scenes

A MYSTERY

(By Dorothy Herzog) An amazing figure of a man pul- verised Hollywood Boolvard on October. 17. It vore a B. V. D. shirt and a cunning pair of blue |trunks: It walked with a long, awinging stride, knees bending gen- Jorously. Over its shoulder was slung a home-made knapsack and in ita hand it carried a staff. His face was weather-beaten and slightly drawn and through the shaggy Iron beard gleamed red lips. Who he was?, Where he was going? Why he dressed in cult style? Another Hollywood mystery

Ho used to make people laugh on the screen. He said his friends have taken unto themselves a new clique. He rarely works now. You see him in a restaurant infrequent- ly. He usually dines in solitude. The evening passes slowly. Waves of depression beat him. He'll fling into the night and walk miles; until }weariness turna him home and from sheer fatigue he sleeps, too fatigued to anticipate a carbon copy tomor- row. Another Hollywood tragedy..

SUE CAROL'S LOVE AFFAIRS

Sue Carol's announcement that she and Nick Stuart have agreed to call their engagement off is some- thing of a surprise. This bureau has heard from any number of sources reports of their being secretly married.

At that, it listens as though it might have been a cinch. Had she used her own name of Evelyn and her former husband's name of Keefer Evelyn Keefer no one would have recognized the moniker. Had Nick used his own Eume. Nicholas Prata-well, that's an othor cinch.

Yet Sue calls the whole thing off

JOHN GILBERT

The curious reception accorded John Gilbert's initial, "talkie”. "His Glorious Night", has led to canalderable amateurish prophesy- Ing.

+

Gilbert's voice has a tone colour that might be defined as baritone- tenor. The "mike" la not particu tarly generous in recording It. It' is obvious, from audience reaction,. that his voice comes as a surprise. Hence, the curious reception ac- corded Jack's Initial “talkia".

A

Will this first talkie" serve to familiarize movie-goers with vocal Gilbert? And will this familiarization lead to popularity jor marked Indifference? In the jevent of the former, all will be O.K. In the event of, the latter-well, that is where the prophesying enters. For a star's career de- pends upon the public's plaudits in terms of box office.

Of course, "His Glorious Night" presents Gilbert in a tough part. Mythical kingdoms have been suc- cessful as silent pictures. Put, the {extravagant love scenes and situa- tions in words and they aren't even tepid drama. The stage knowa that.

Gilbert has never abandoned act- ing to direct pictures. Years ago, The refused a splendid directorial offer to travel West and pursue romance which he captured for a brief time when he married Leatrice

Anderson, I am told, la big boss of the revue. Paul Feyos will flourish a megaphone. Along with Andersen comos experts who will carry out his decorative ideas. The revue promises something new in presentation. When Anderson finishes it. he is alated to go to Famous Players for two produc- tions.

He's very much an artist and rather unique in clothing' revue conceptions. Years ago, Anderson was signed by the Publix crowd to create presentations for their theatres, being also the Famous Players' houses,
