Destroyers Draw

Afteen

The Hong Kong Club "A" and the Destroyer Flotilla played last night at Happy Valley a game characterised by hard play and good feeling. rather than by science or precision. The Flotilla turned out practically the same as did duty for them Evans, against the Somersets, however, coming in at full-back instead of North. The latter went into the three-quarters instead of Atkinson, who took Weekes' place at the base of the scrum. Both sides were distinctly unorthodox In their methods, scarcely a decent scrum being seen.

Holmes, on the Club side, was outstanding, and, in several in- dividual efforts, used his speed and weight to advantage. made the opening from which Peers scored a good try that was not converted.

He

Clerk, who is obviously not so fast as he used to be, will be a welcome addition to the very Club side, when he gets a little more training.

The Navy try was made in most unusual fashion by Howitt, who scrambled over his scrum to score near the corner.

Result: Hong Kong Club "A", 3 points; Destroyer Flotilla, 3 points.

WAR SECRETARY SAYS WE ARE NOW PAYING THE PIPER

WAR LOAN STOCK

Rugby, Yesterday.

A number of questions were asked to-day in the House of Commons regarding a statement which was made in the coume of a debate on the Unemployment Insurance bill by Mr. Tom Shaw, Secretary for War. Mr. Shaw referred to the mention made by Mr. Lloyd George the Liberal leader, of the crushing weight of the social services. But, he said, under Mr. Lloyd George's Government and under every other Government.

a policy had been pursued which had led this coun- try into paying at least £100,000,000 a year to people who had not the slightest right to it.

During the war we had money lent to us at inflated rates and wo adopted after the war a financial policy of deflation, and now we were paying Interest on that de flated money. That was the fact that had to be faced before this country could be put on Its feet again.

Mr. Shaw's statements created dicate a desire to interfere with the some surprise, as seeming to in-

terms on which war loan stock was held.

Mr. Philip Snowden, the Chan- cellor of the Exchequer, replying to questions on the subject to-day, effectively disposed of any such suggestion, however. He said that the Government had no intention of varying the contractual obligations entered into with holders of Coy- ernment securities. The condition of all Government loan was that the Government had the option of re- demption on specific dates, and, of course, could take advantage in the interests of the taxpayers of any favourable opportunity of redeem- ing loans or converting them at a
