HOW TO KEEP SLIM

A Problem Of Vital Interest To Every Woman

NORMA SHEARER DIVULGES SECRET

Norma Shearer writes in "Home Chat" that to keep slim is the object of every Hollywood film star. One of the most beautiful and slimmest of them divulges their diet secret for you to try for your- selves!

In Hollywood (she says) we have two main topics of conversa- tion: "Talkies" and diets. If we are not actually dieting, we know that at any moment it may be necessary for us to reduce our weight a pound or so, and to do " quickly! So we pay great attention to any diet details that our friends may feel inclined to reveal for our benefit.

I am positive that if one could This is the diet I want to pass near, all at once, the conversations on to you. going on at a hundred crowded You cân start the eighteen Lailes in Hollywood's famous days' diet and carry # Montmartre Restaurant, any day at right through without

stop- lunch-time, or at fifty equally ping your ordinary work or making crowded tables at any studio cafe any alteration' in your everyday during the lunch hour, one would life. Isn't that rather marvellous, find "Diet" being vigorously dis-apart from the beneficial results of [cussed at all of them. For it is the diet:

almost a mania in Filmland.

This is natural, of course, be- cause our figures are our livelihood. More than that, we realise how cruel the camera can be. It puts weight on everybody. Even the limmest people look plumper than they really are. So what chance have those whose proportions are on the generous side?

For our own sake, from a work standpoint, we have to safeguard our appearance all the time. And I believe honestly that we have found we feel-fitter, healthier, and more full of energy in every way when we watch our meals carefully and eat enough, but never too much.

In Hollywood, hostesses, and waiters in restaurants, have ceased to be astonished if someone asks for a dish of lettuce and an orange or two, making an entire meal of these simple foods.

Although I have not indulged in a definite diét myself, I always watch my food carefully, and if I have lots of aweet things or ice- cream one day I take care to go without anything sweet the day after.

Well-known Diets

Of course, there is the well- known tamb chop and pineapple diet. There is the milk and potato diet. There is the orange juice diet. Now, I am a great believer in this orange juice diet; but it has a drawback. The girl who goes in for it should stay in bed for three or four days or longer during which she lives on nothing but orange juice.

It is weakening, naturally, to take nothing but orange juice, every two or three hours; for some days on end. To attempt to do one's ordin ary work at the same time is foolish. To stay in bed is the only wise way. Not only does this form of diet rost the digestive organs in a marvellous way, but it also takes off weight at the rate of anything from eight ounces to one pound a day. You feel hungry, I am told, during the first twenty-four hours; then you cease to have any desire for solid food and are quite happy with your orange juice.

I have many friends in Holly. wood who go on a six days' orange juice diet every six weeks, and eat what they like, in reason, the rest of the time. This keeps their Agures in good shape. Other film girls have an orange diet once a week. But I don't believe in this

so much, because they are inclined to eat too heavily the day after. not having got over the "hungry" stage.

The Eighteen Days' Diet There is one fine diet that Holly- wood follows with true faith and appreciation. It is called the Eighteen Days' diet, and is the in- vention of a well-known American medical man.

Ethel Barrymore, I think, was the first prominent stage star to try it.. The diet reduced hor, welght so marvellously and left her feeling so well that she passed it on to her friends.
