RUGBY FOOTBALL

RAMBLINGS

INVITATION RECEIVED FROM SHANGHAI

1:

GREAT LOCAL ENTHUSIASM

[By "All On"]

With the Hong Kong Football Club ground returfed and in ex- cellent condition, the Rugby en- thusiasts of the Colony have every reason to congratulate them- selves on the "praspects of the game this season. Great keonne is being evinced by the Navy; and the Army side, greatly strengthen ed by the addition of several good men from the Somersets, will be again a force to reckon with this year. Already half

dozen games have been played between the 'Club XV. and various com- binations; and quite a large num- her of spectators are now making a habit of going down to Happy Valley to see the regular Wednes- day evening fixtures.

&

The triangular Cup Competition should be of considerable interest when the games are arranged, and I hear that an invitation has al- ready been received from Shang- hai to send up a representative side at Chinese New Year, Of course there should be no doubt

about our ability to field a strong XV: the only questions are who will be chosen and how many of our best players will be able to travel.

Honours Even Thero, have been four "Rugger" Interport games up to date, I think

To-morrow's Game For to-morrow I full-dress Club XV. will turn out against H.M.S. "Cornwall." This should be a great game as the ship has a reputation for Rugger, and on previous meetings the two teams have been well matched. Then an extra Thursday fixture is being put on this week, when the Destroyer Flotilla XV. will do

battle against a Club side. Spec tators are turning out in increas- ing numbers for these fixtures and the enthusiasm that has been evinced has been most gratifying. Since penning the above I had the pleasure of seeing a game last night between the Somersets and the Destroyer Flotilla, The sol

tiers won very easily and with a little less selfishnese at the base of the scrum, might, easily have doubled their score of 11 points to nil. The forwards on the win- ning side, capably led by Swayne, are playing better together and

and so far honours are even. Three times the games have been played here, and, of these Hong Kong have won ofly one, emerging worthy winners fast season. In 1928 we also were victorious in Shangbai. What our prospects are this year there is no method of ascertaining but one thing are very speedy in breaking up. sure, there will be a great match and coming round. for the flag and shield.

Mr. H. R. B. Hancock, Prest dent of the local Association, gave the toast of the "Shanghai Inter port Tennis Team," and recalled his first match against Shanghai- in 1901. It was indeed a great pleasure to have with them the Shanghai atars who had given at excellent display of tennis during

the last few days. The series of matches had been fought out is

that spirit of sportsmanship which they had expected to see. He was also pleased to see Mr. Wade as skipper of the Shanghai side. Mr. Wade had been singles champloa of Shanghal on more than one oc casion, and he hoped it would be several years before he gave up the game.

DEFINITE UTILITY OF FLOCCULATION

DIFFICULTY OF DETECTION

The difficulty of diagnosing small- pox at the beginning of an outbreak and distinguishing it from chicken- pox has led to a series of tests being carried out on behalf of the Medical Research Council into the diagnostic value of what is known as the "Vaccinia Variola Flocculation Test." The method is advocated by Dr. M. H. Gordon, who is em- ployed by the Council.

The principal tests were carried out during the Dundee autbreak of

St.

1927 by Dr. W. L. Burgess, Medical omcer of Health for that city; Dr. James Craigle, Department of Bac- teriology, University of Andrews; and Professor W. J. Tulloch, Professor of Bacteriology, University College, Dundee, and their report was published by the

Medical Research Council.

Perhaps never has the Club started off with better hopes than they did at the commencement of this season.

The usual crop of accidents and departures has now diminished these to some extent; but it should be easy to put to gether a formidable side to uphold our honour. Of last year's side there are still available a fair proportion. Grieve, Scott, Koop. The Flotilla side have a few!Result of Draw For The Plummer, Bonnar, Riddell, West, players who know very little about Moodle Mine-Day, and Massey, are all more or less in training and playing as well as ever. Though Dr. Hide can play an excellent game at full back, I think he is not competing for his place this year. In any case, it would be a good man who would oust Grieve

the game, and until this is rec- tified any game they take part in will be very scrappy. The for- wards nearly always lost the ball in the scrums, and it says much for the outsides, that, under the circumstances, they kept the score as low as it was. Weekes, es- from his position on his form re-pecially, appeared to be doing cently. His hands are as safe ns

sailors had. Sim led his forwards well, and what the pack lacked in experience they certainly made up for in energy and dash.

A Nasty Blow

Of the other outsides one can as yet say little. Stanion's trans- fer to Swatow has been a nasty blow to the Colony as we shall miss his sparkling initiative be- hind the acrum, either as half or centre-three.

Mr. M. W. Lo. captain of the local team, said that although they had beaten Shanghai, they had nevertheless learned many Ano points from their visitors. He pald a tribute to the Hong Kong players saying that each one of them had played their part and the whole taken together had con- tributed toward the team's auc-

Ceda.

"The Guests"

:

In proposing "The Guests," Mr. G. W. Sewell sold that the local Association was of recent growth, otherwise they would have made better arrangements for the re- ception of the visitors. Shanghal | had given them only short notice, and in a place like Hong Kong it Was necessary to have longer notice in order to book up grounds, etc.

Replying for the guests, Hon. Dr. S. W. Tso sald that he was

serious, but when an early case of the severe type of smallpox is mis- taken for chicken-pox, the con- sequences may be disastrous, ns
