Now that the new winter fashions are on the tapis for criticisms und rejections, points are belag watched very closely by the good dresser and couturier, and small details are creeping in and out. One of the Inteat details to creep in again is the hand-knitted jumper, and it is obvious that wearing them insule or outside skirts will be optional, as a witle coloured stripe just above the heri imlicates.
A wide line of red supplies the over-skirt tendency in the finest red and white wool mixture imaginable that is interspersed with small red bends knitted in at conventionally wide spacings all over the surface.
White beads are knitted in the same manner with the finest black wool, but no dividing line appears to warrant that it should be worn out- side the skirt... In short, "a chacun son gout." NOVELTY JERSEYS
Georgette-tweed is given to the new six-ounce texture which is the lightest produced so far! One of the designers is using it for very smart two-piece dresses with tunics and pleated skirts that dip slightly lower at the sides than back and front.

Fashion Forecast In A Play
Ascot fashions are always an alluring thought, and a forecast of the type of gown to be worn at this smartest of all race meetings in the still far-off summer of 1930 gives a special dress interest to Mr. Reginald Berkeley's new play, "Miss Adventure," at the Winter Garden Theatre London, in mail week.

Pale Blue And Silver Lame
Parudes, plays, and the social events of the autumn seuson are familiarlsing the eye with the new and many outlines of fashion, women who at first disliked the long skirt and curious old-time effect of the three-quarter fur- edged wrap are of opinion that the new silhouette grows on one.

The skirt falls in points at the back and sides, where it touches, the ground, and the three-quarter coat, which follows the now well-established flat-hip movement, is drawn closely round the figure. This type of ensemble is well adapted to the rich velveta so much worn this season.

The natural lines of the figures are followed in the moulding of the bodice. The new high waistline is maintained, and the skirt cascades in two grace fully curved diagonal lines, the hem reaching almost to the ground at the back. WHEN DANCING
A Pretty Gown and a Smiling Face
If It is true that clothes have a psychological effect on us, as 60 many people assert, then we must. be careful how we choose our oven- ing frocks, for every girl knows how necessary It Is to look and be bright and cheerful when in the ballroom, for if you haven't a partner and you look gloomy and depressed, there is very little hope of you getting one! If, on the other hand, you have a partner and you still look gloomy and depressed, there is no doubt he will speedily leave your side and seek more congenial company.
A bright and smiling face when at a dance is essential, and if the
wearing of a pretty dress-and one that suits you-is going to help to produce that amiling face, aurcly it is worth while expending a little care on the selection!
It Is yet 巍 little early de- to forecast the finitely

of the early season are subject to CHAIR-COVER WORK modification and revision in a month or so; for women speedily pick out the styles they like and alter or pass over altogether those they do not like. Consequently the Impetuous purchaser who has taken the dress designers at their first word, and has spent her money on a fashionable dress, may find her. self with a style which never be. comes ally fashionable because its wayward fancy of the particular mode has not caught the fashion

This Year
Evening cloaks are undoubtedly a problem this going to present year and it would seem, on review- ing the fashions, that the incon- siderate designers have thought only of those fortunate beings who go to their dances and theatres in a luxurious limousine, for evening cloaks are to be short, and do not

A sensible fashion, but only for the possessors of large, well lined limousines, for even the in- side of a hired taxi is not the beat place for an unprotected evening dress skirt and one can imagine how impossible such a cloak would be for the young Judy who patronises tramears!

Crepo-de-Chine is the material actually used in one of the heavy makes that fall in soft and elegant folds, but crepe satin, the new taffetas and the curiously ethereal velvet weaves are no less appro priate for the design depicted, which successfully combines the moulded silhouette with graceful flare in the skirt. The V neck, that is perhaps the most generally becoming of all neek fashions, balances with the "V" point in the fitted yoke. Beyond a cluster of old-world-looking silver roses on
the left shoulder and a trail of the aame worn low down on the right hip there is no trimming.
THE SLIM LINE
Fur coats, if they come into the present fashion scheme, must be elim-looking, and the greater accen. tuation of the natural line of the figure that is now encouraged by the dress creators means that only close-cut short-haired skins are suitable, and that these should be soft and supple.
One model gives the moulded line in broad-tail, ütting closely at the waist and round the hips, but falling into the full graceful lines below. Ermine is used effectively in the trimming, and the arrange- ment of scarf collar, with the ends looped at the back, could be appil ed to a cloth. cont. Little bunches of the tails decorate the pointed scarf-ends.
A triangular Insertion of ermine on the sleeve, pointing from the elbow to the wrist, is interesting, and carries out the same angle, as the collar, but with the point re versed. The movement generally la triangular, is in the case of the hip yoke.

BRITISH TWEEDS

A British woman recently obser- ved that all the beat British tweeds must go to Paris, I does rather strike one that way! Moreover, all the manfacturers have combined to single out the best designers to give. them a new chic. The evolution is without precedent, and no one can speak of fashion to-day without mentioning tweeds, not so much the good rough type for long cross- country trampa-though they do come into the schome--but the one hundred and one new colour mix- tures, designs, and lighter weaves adopted as a medium for more elegant models than merely sports styles.

MODES
Rainproof Evening Cloaks
Rainy days are to produce some smart fashions this season. A wet theatre night problem has been solved by the silk-proofed evening cloak, which was launched at a dis- play by the Dela Rubber Company in London. Seaweed green lined with black formed a reversible evening cloak.
"When in doubt wear your velvet coat" is the new rainy, afternoon and rule. Fragile fabrics, like velvet silk hitherto regarded as "ruined" if a spot of rain fell on them, are being proofed to with- stand a baking.
Certain hard. wearing furs, too, such as astrak han and opossum, come into the wet-weather scheme.
Wet weather fashions have been revolutionised by the secret, pro- cess which has made the tweed cost of Fashion eligible for wet as well as fine days.
Tweed, to begin with, has a cer. tain amount of rain-resisting power, which, it was stated, has been increased by 40 per cent. rubber in tweed treated in this way, through this process. There is no

coats are natural waist they are straight in line from neck to hem, but this is not all there is to be said about them, since fine jersey tweeds are made to look identical, and plain jersey cloth is being used more frequently than it has been for some time to combine one or two-piece dresses.
A greater interest is displayed in tweeds as a fabric in the sense that straight-line coats are often simpli- fied by being made without linings. This not only accentuates a decora- tive value over similar patterned and similar coloured dresses, but is economical as well.
Straight backs
