NAVAL BASE

DOMINIONS AND THE SIR A. CHAMBERLAIN RUSSIANS LAUNCH

THE OFFENSIVE

MANCHULI BOMBARDED FOR TEN HOURS

"NOT CONSIDERED NECESSARY | CRITICISM OF MR. HENDERSON'S

TO CONSULT THEM"

EVASIVE REPLIES

London, Yesterday.

In the House of Commona to-day, replying to Mr. Howard Bury as to whether the Dominions and Colonies which subscribed to the construc- tion of Singapore Naval Bass were consulted for a cessation of the work, Mr. MacDonald referred to Mr. Alexander's reply on November 13 and said that the Dominions were notified but the Colonial Gov-} ernment was not previously inform- ed. It was not thought necessary to consult the Dominions' Govern-

ment formally regarding the slow- ing down or

suspension of work, but they would of course be consult- ed before any decision was taken affecting the scheme as a whole.

How The Money Was Spént Mr. Howard Bury asked whether Mr. MacDonald was aware that the base was for the protection of the Dominions and that their money was being spent. Therefore, their agreement should first be Recur- ed.

Mr. MacDonald said he hoped that Mr. Bury would excuse him not going into details which at pre- sent should not be discussed, but Mr. Bury must see that certain agreements that might be possible at the five-power conference might affect the whole original idea of the Base.

Mr. H. L. Amery asked whether Mr. MacDonaid were aware that the | Malay States contribution was given with the express object of expedit- ing the work on the Base.

Mr. MacDonald replied that ho was not quite sure he was aware of the content of the question in the form in which it was put, but Mr. Amery knew perfectly well that the Government's predecessors had spent the Malay States' money first, i and that there was no government of this country which would avoid obligations like that-Reuter.
