BLACK GOWNS
Wisest Choice For One- Dress Woman
There is no doubt that a black evening gown is the wisest choice for the one-dress-woman (by this we mean the girl who can afford only one evening frock). Most women look well in black, If they don't, it is usually because they do not take any care ovar other parts of their toilette. Efficiant grooming, for instance, is very necessary indeed-perhaps a touch of rouge to brighten sallow cheeks or a touch of lipstick to deepen the colour of a mouth that may not be too well defined. These are the tiny but important details which can make or mar the wearer of the black dress,
Then, of nurse, special care must be taken with shoes and hose -you simply can't afford to wear cheap or shabby ones with a black dress; on the other hand you can add a note of colour, a soupeon of chic, by the careful selection of these important accessories.
Indeed, not the least of the ud vantages of the black gown is the number of times you can ring the ehanges by merely changing such items as shoes, hose, jewellery, and shoulder-posies (which, by the way, are supposed to be returning to Favour), but you must be smart in a black gown, otherwise you will probably look exceedingly dowdy. There's no half way with black!
FASHION IN HATS
A year ago, Evelyn Brent, play- pinkering opposite Adolphe Menjou in a picture called "His Tiger Lady." wore a tight-fitting turban made of gold leaves and gold grapes.
Travis Banton, fashion designer the Paramount studios in Hollywood, created the head-dress to fit Miss Brent's classic features and sophisticated demeanor on the

It is not a bad plan always to have a comfy pair of gloves handy to slip on when not playing, and if a reliable lotion is applied to the hands on returning home, no harm should come to them.
No Make-Up
It is usually found that the girl who follows any sport decries the over use of the creams, lotions, and powder that constitute "make-up." Blatant and obvious artificiality is. of course, to be avoided; indeed, as a general rule, the less artifice you employ the better.
The triumphant sensation one ex- perience after the most glorious victory on-the courts is quickly dis pelled if one is consciouя after- wards that tiny blotches, lines and ugly patches have appeared on one's face which, of course, are the consequence of getting hot on top of a made-up complexion.

Many tennis players have great faith in the "spirit rub" to bring comfort to tender feet which have become blistered and inflamed.
Methylated spirit is the spirit that is used in this case. It should never be employed when the skin care must be taken when using it is chapped or broken and, of course,
to keep away from a naked light.
Yet another popular mixture is limewater and inseed, which any chemist will mix for you and which is exceptionnily good for blisters on feet ug hands.

Then fulse jewels began to ap- pear. At first it was thought very vulgar to wear false jewellery, and anyone who did took infinite pains to try to pretend it was not false, To be "caught out" with a false pearl necklace or diamond bracelet was as bad as being caught out with a wig or false teeth.
After a time, however, people became bolder and bolder, and frankly admitted wearing pearls and French paste. By this time, however, ornaments of some. kind have become an acknowledged part of a woman's wardrobe; like hats and gloves, one must have them.
LOOKING-GLASS VOGUE
The French have always valued the looking-glass just as the British consider that one look at one's face is all that is necessary to present a good appearance.
The looking-glass has been shorn of something of its immensity, but
it recurs in a number of forms to- day. The rimless glass causes it to look rather like a nickel plaque, which gives shine and light to the room. Ornaments are made with a number of small looking-glass mosaics,
One of the most amusing forms of the locking-glass is that of the cubo of different sizes. This offers
a mirror for all three dimensions, and it is used' somatimes as book- ends and sometimes as shelves for small ornamenta. Usually there are three mirror cubes of graduated sizes. These are placed on the top of each other to form a stepped pyramid. The objects are placed upon the steps, which naturally reflect them below and at the side.
HALF-LENGTH CAPES
The fashion of the tweed frock in pretty autumnal shadings, with 4 half-length cape of the 'samo' fabric, is new and young-looking. These capes are detachable: they can be lined or not, as desired. Many for the mid-season are un- Hned and fit closely round the. shoulders. Molyneux featured them in his earlier collection, and they have proved popular for coun try life in Britain. Capas are simong the fashion-pelnts that the designers have been featuring in- their collections for some time past. Once they assume a becoming and practical aspect, they, are quickly. taken up, and with the more atted frocks in tweed they form a useful WIS).

BRAID IN VOGUE
A Useful Autumnal Decoration
Braid-wide and narrow, dull and cire-is used quite extensively on tailored or semi-tailored gar- ments. It is a useful autumnal de coration, Instead of the narrow bands of fur that are a factor in the more wintry models; for harsher fabrics and country clothes also braid seems for more suitable. Rowa of narrow soutache in black look extremely smart as a border to a beige or white tweed.
A coat and skirt seen at Le Tou- quet showed a model in white made with one of the new three-quarter collarless coats, unlined, and a bor- der all round of the narrow black soutache (that looked like embro- dery). The skirt had flat box pleats arranged from a fitted yoke with the same braided border. The white silk blouse was tied with A black and white spotted scarf, and the waistband was of black braid and white kid, with pochette of the same, This was completed by a coal heaver's hat in all-white felt, the brim of which was caught back with Ц beautiful dagger in diamonds and black onyx. Sandal- shoes of white antelope were strap ped with black patent, and no stockings were worn.
BERTHE A CAPE!
It seems that the berthe, which has been much worn on afternoon and evening frocks this season, hus now decided to become a cape! Sometimes it will be of the same material as the frock, but if the latter happens to be of unpattern- ed fabric the cape may be of broche velvet or broche ninon.
