THE
CHINA MAIL,
Behind the Scenes
in Hollywood
[By Dorothy Herzog] Hollywood. With Mary Pickford
and Douglas Fairbanks safely out of town, Europe bound, they sanc- tloned a preview of their current
| joint effort, "Taming of the Shrew."
The preview
WAS absolutely secret. Hence, all Hollywood came to this impromptu opening night. The non-professional section of the audience had no idea what picture would be run, other than a United Artists production. When Mary's and Doug's name. flashed on the screen-in the order named-the home stayed a spontaneous demon- atration.
"Taming of the Shrow" may go under the editorial knife as a re- sult of the proview, BO It wouldn't be fair to pen a critique. Suffice to say, however, that the gentecl comedy of Shakespearo vields to a boisterousness bordering on burlesque. The story hus been boldly tampered with from the mid- dle of the picture to the end which, bewildering one might remark, fades in with abruptness following the merry antic opinion of Holly- woodites: "It's Mary and Dong." And it is a beautiful Mary.
Mary Pickford
Almost too beautiful and charming for a good old fashioned shrew. A splendid Doug. Doug, in his first talky, surpasses the Doug of silent drama daya. His voice has a curi- ous electrical quality and swinge along dynamically. First honours to Fairbanks. He Impresses this cor- respondent as being more of a Petruchlo than Mary 15 Katherine.

fused. He wants to act. For four years, he has cranked the camera photographing *Burton Holmes' Travelogues. He is an artistic cam- eraman plus. He has been in every country in the world except two. He speaks five languages-six, in- cluding English, to wit: French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Japanese.
WRONG AGAIN
If the scribe had a nickel for every mistake she aucceeds in cram- ming into columns, she'd retire on her wealth. The latest concerns Dorothy Parker. A few weeks ago, I ran a story stating that Miss Parker wrote the lyrics for the hit theme in "Dynamite". Correct. The story went on to aay, however, that she is receiving a royalty for her work which may shoot into the neighbourhood of $15,000. Wrong, Miss Parker pens the following cur- rection from France, where she is at present rollicking:
"A kind friend back in America sent me the royalty clipping. I wish with all my heart your information wore true, and so, I am sure, does the Bankers' Trust Company in Paris, with whom I have what is called my bank account. My lyric- writing, however, was not done on a royalty basis; I was on salary with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and that Ittle yem, 'How Am I to Know?," was just all in the day's work. We were all, to mint a phrase, like one big family. So will you be an angel and tell your readers that that $15,000 was just a beautiful dream before my creditors back in the old country get to thinking?
"I was sent a copy of "How Am I to Know?,' over here. It is interest- ing to see how adroitly it has been altered, so that there is none of that nonsense of lines rhyming with other lines, any more.
"What with this and what with that, it is very pleasant to be living on the Riviera. Sincerely yours, (Signed) Dorothy Parker."
I must cogitate and print some- thing else erroneous about Miss Parker.
ASTUTE PRODUCERS
·
Of course producers can't always be right. Hum. Take the case of Tullo Carminatti: Tulio has knocked 'em for superlatives in. Jack Holt has an interesting con- tract with Columbia Pictures. It calle for fourteen weeks' work out of the year, at a salary said to bu $40,000. That gives Jack 88 weeks to do with as he pleases. He be gins a Columbia talky soon.
