CONCISE ORIGINAL NAVIGATION TABLES.

FIXING SHIPS" POSITIONS

Navigators will be interested to know that for the ridiculously amali aum of 78 zents (3s.) they may now purchase from the American Hydro- graphic Office a complete miniature. epitome of navigation comprising pages. Used in conjunction with the Nautical Almanac, no additional tables are required Axing the ship's position by sun, moon, star or planet. Contained in the main body of the tables is most concias tabula. tion of spherical values derived by resolving tho navigational triangle Into two right-angled triangles,

This most excellent little book en- titled "Navigation for Marinera and Aviators," is quite the most delight- ful to use that the writer has known, and consists mainly of two tables for computing the true altitude and zimuth simultaneously. The author 1x Lieut.-Commander Dralsonstock, U.S.N.

Using the nearest degree of hour angle, and latitude, the navigator simply takes out the quantities b-A -C-Z at one reading from table 1. Applying the declination of the celestial body algebraically to the are b. he enters table 2 with the re

uit. thence taking out B and D.

(A+B) gives the log the true al titude, which is taken out in the B

column.

B+D) gives 2", which is taken But in D column.

Z+Dr Z" gives the azimuth.

The line of bearing is now plot ted through the assumed latitude and longitude, and the difference between ealculate and true observed altitudes plotted to obtain the position line at right angles to the bearing of the body, as in the Marg St. Hilaire method. Thus the complete position line is furnished. In addition various other applications of the spherical triangle may be used, including the calculation of Great Circle COUPRO and distances, and the identification of 11. unknown

snapped cloudy weather. In all these in atances the ong method is applied without variation. and affords ac curnty within 0.1 minutes of arc It is also interesting to note that no more than two quantiites (loga) are ever added together.

The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used Aberdeen, the differences being very for the Victoria Naval Yard and

It is interesting to observe that the first attempt to simplify rigorous. spherical calculation in nautical as tronomy WAS made in 1793, when Lalande published, his Horary. tables giving the hour angle for yarlousing were fatitudes, declinations, and altitudes by inspection. Singularly enough they were computed by his niece, and: published at a price of two guineas a fact which soon prohibited their general use among seamen

Since that time the discovery of the Summer principle by an Ameri ean abip master of that name was, the next step towards simplification, based the too little known and many valanble tables by A. C. Johnson.(in cluding "cloudy weather"), appearing
