JAPAN'S ATTITUDE TO MANCHURIA
SOVEREIGNTY OF CHINA ADMITTED
REASON FOR OCCUPATION
Kyoto, Yesterday. Manchuria was the subject of the discussions nt the round table confer-
ence to-day. The Japanese pointed out that they are in Manchuria primarily because China' is unable to defend her- self against foreign aggression from that quarter.
Japan's interests were of a special kind there. Peace in Manchuria was for Japan a matter of self-preservation. However, they admitted Chinese sover, eignty in Manchuria. The suggestion that Japan's position in Manchuria was analogous to the British position in India, and the American in Hayti, was disputed by the Chinese,

Japan that Manchuria had developed to such an extent commercfally.
Change of Feeling Another delegate observed that Britain and America quite apart from Japan and China, were interested in the prosperity and maintenace of ponco in Manchuria, and also the "Open Door" there. A Japanese delegate remarked upon a certain change of feeling regards Manchuris, in Japan. Young Japan had different |views more liberal-than the
Japanese regarding the problem. Not all Japanese were Dichards.

Dissension in his ranks will pave the way toward the Ironsides reaching the centre of Kwangsl and then making a forced march on the south, in order to enter Kwangtung from the south-west. This would be a roundabout route, but less, op- j'position would be met.

In numbers, equipment, munitions and money, the Kwangtung and Kwangs! "loyalists" Arc much superior to the Ironsides; but any [thing can happen in a campaign of this kind. A change of political feeling, or the swaying of the balance by handsome payments of money, may make a material differ- ence at the most unexpected hour. ANTI-NATIONALISTS HOPEFUL
That the groups opposed to the National Government (and, there- fore, to the administration in Can- ton) are optimistic is indicated by the words of Hsu Chung-chl, some time Commander-in-Chief of the Kwangtung forces. Speaking to a Hong Kong vernacular paper, he de- arled the monopoly of the highest civil and Party posts by military men (pointing at Marshal Chiang Kai-shek) and advanced the usual out-of-office theories for reorganisa- tion.
'A POLITICAL REFUGEE'. - General Yu Tsok-pak, the recent- ly dismissed Civil Governor of Kwangsi, remains in Indo-China, whence one of his staff has written to the "China Mall" political cor- respondent, alleging that General [Yu was closely questioned by the high French authorities and that he was subsequently, permitted to re- main in Indo-China, ostensibly as a political refuges.
Feeling in Canton is tense. Strict vigilance is being maintained buti there is, at the moment, not even the shadow of imuninent danger to the city unless there is an Internal rising, which is unlikely.
