Exciting Scenes at Swimming Race

Exciting scenes ware witnessed at the women's swimming club's annual race in Plymouth Sound from the breakwater to the shore, a distance of a mile and three- quarters.

Soon after seven competitors, had started the sea bacame very rough, and pilot boats found it impossible to keep near the swimmers.

One boat went on to the breakwater rocks, while three other boats drift- ed ashore near Bovisand Fort, leav- ing several competitors unattended.

Three Awimmers, one aged thir- teen, were taken from the water by the officials who were in a motor- bout. A woman jumped overboard fully clothed to assist one, and they clung to a lifebuoy until the boat was manoeuvred near them.

The pilot boat of the leading competitor had to be continuously baled with a felt hat, but in spite of the difficulties finished.
