The rate of premium for big sliver dollars in Canton usually ranges from 10 to 15 per cent. but recently it suddenly advanced to 20 per cent, which is easily a record high mark.
Frum information furnished by both the money-exchanging and banking communities in the city, it is learned that the cause of the advance is due to the recent adoption of the silver dollar as the currency basis in Hong Kong so as to enable that commercial community to meet competition with Shanghal in the matter of trade.
Since Canton is in very close connection with Hong Kong in the commercial field, local mer chanta are always required to buy exchange on Hong Kong for goods purchased at Hong Kong.
