THE CHINA MAIL,
KENITRA HARBOUR
All Records Broken
The growing. trade of Kenitra brings into prominence the import- ance of that excellent harbour north of Morocco. Thanks to its connec tions by rail and its splendid roads, all parts of the country, and es- pecially the big towns of Foz. Meknes, Ouczian, &c., are easily se cessible.
The offcial traffic returns for the harbour of Kenitra
during August, 1920, shows that its shipping eclips ed all previous records, the gross tonnage amounting to 43,500 tons and the net tonnage to 24,800 tons. The amount of cargo handled shows A corresponding increase, the figures being 18,800 tons inward and 16,530 outward, the total thus exceeding 35,000 tons handled during Jaat
month,
The traffe during the first eight months of the year amounted to 184,000 tons against 130,000 tons in the previous year and 117,000 tons
in 1917. The total traffic for the pre- sent year is expected to reach close on 300,000 tons. Within two years, the length of the embankments on the River Sebou will be doubled and furnished with elestric cranes, and sheer leg of 50 tons. Moreover, drag- ging is improving the river every day.
During the previous year Kenitra Harbour received 306 ships with a gross tonnage of 355,928 tons and n net tonnage of 209,818 tons, the number of each
country's steamers
in this traffic being as follows: France 163 steamers (or 56 per cent. of the traffic), firent Britain 27, Ger- many 23, Morocco 16, Spain 14, Por- túgal 13, Italy 12, Denmark 12, Nor- way 10, and other countries 10.

So far as British ships are con cerned the literary leanings of crews are mainly encouraged by the Sea. farers Education Service, an organi sation which started operations in a small way nine years ago by supply. ing a modest library for the crew of the Holt Line "Aeneas." Twelve months ago it owned some 40,000 volumes, which are circulated in 290 vessels belonging to 33 different com- panies, while today, according to an official who addressed R meeting held at Cambridge In connec tion with the World Conference on Adult Education, the stack of books was 55,000 and the vessels in which they are placed employed 16,000 men, two-thirds of whom are regular allents of the librarians.
The service has received valuable ald and encouragement from ship- owners, the seamen's organisations, from public libraries and from the Carnegie Trustees, and it hopes in due course to equip with a stock of books available to the crew of every Ensign. Now that the frit basin of the Shieldhall Dock, on the Clyde, is nearing completion, the question of proceeding with the next basin will have to be considered. It is believ
the Clyde Navigation Trustees will not be in any hurry to go on with this extension, The first basin will add 50 considerably to the harbour facilities that it should be possible to cope comfort- ably with all trade requirements for some years to come.
Were the Shieldhall scheme to be completed in its entirety there is the danger that the quayage might euf- strip the needs of traffic. Until ad- ditional accommodation could be put into use the heavy financial burdens Involved by such expansion would scarcely be justified.
If the trade of the Clyde continues to grow with the passing of the years the trustees are in the post- tion of being able to provide for it. They have the necessary ground and the plans drawn up, and a few years would be sufficient to bring the ex W. tension lato being.
