Extension Would Injure Philippines
Washington, October 24. Extension of the American contwise shipping laws to the Philippines was opposed by Secretary of State Stimson to-day as "a very grave mistake," at the hearing being conducted by the Senate Commerce Sub-Committee.
He said that it seemed to be gen erally admitted that the purpose of the proposal was to permit American shipping to charge higher rates, thus erecting A trade barrier against the ivinnds. This he characterised as “a ittle more brutally frank barrier than the tariff would be."
Explaining that the United States had gone beyond the "cave man age of colonial development."
