"ACE'S " JOKE

LONG-DISTANCE FLIGHT FOR UNWILLING FRIENDS

THE CHINA MAIL,

A famous French air "ace," M. Bossoutrat, has just played an amusing practical joke on two of his colleagues.

For some days during the intense heat M. Bogsoutrat has been test- ing on the sands his four-motored seaplane. He took it up recently from Suresnes, in company with En- gineer Hearst and Navigator Cres pi. It was expected that the flight would be of only a few min- uter duration, but once in the air Bossoutrat made straight away to Caudebec, in Normandy.

His companions both protested that they wished to return at once to Sureanes, but Bossoutrat simply replied: "If you do not like a little trip you can jump out."

description of the train journey to Mr. Price opened his lecture with a Yunnanfu where the rails were washed away and destroyed by heavy rains.

The railway itself was a gigantic feat, and one of their chief thrills was to see the suspension bridge which was literally thrown over from one moun- tain to another across a deep and wide ravine.

Then the audience was told of a meeting with rebel troops, by whom Mr. Price and his companion were re- ceived with great consideration.

Escort Vanished?

Two days later, however, they found their escort had vanished, and it was their supreme thrill, in the form of a on the fifth day that they met with bandit hold-up.

In a deep valley, they suddenly found themselves surrounded by brigands, who confronted them with rifles and an executioner's sword, whilst one of the men had a gun alung over his shoulder and a knife gripped by his

teeth.

It was then, said Mr. Price, that his spirits. began to sink, but fortunately after the bandits had made them give up certain of their goods and money, they were allowed to go free.

From then on to Nanking and Shanghai, their progresa, which was divided between walking and water travelling, was only once held up.

Mr. Price made interesting refer- ences to the Mohammedan villages which they semetimes met, and men- vilage or town where peaches and tioned that they occasionally found a

They had diverting experiences at the ints, where they sometimes stayed. At one place the, room had no window, and although they lifted two of the bricks off the roof to obtain some light, these had to be replaced soon afterwards owing to the heavy rain, whilst in the doorway coolies smoked opium continuously.

The most magnificent part of their trip said Mr. Price, was the last three days, when they were able to lle back in a junk, and visualise all they had seen and experienced earlier.

BOHEMIA'S "ROSE TOWN" ·

At Blatna, in South Bohemia, Jan Boehm has created such a wonder- ful rose garden that a visit to it in the early days, of September has become an annual event for many visitors from Czecho-Slovakia, Bavaria, and Austria. Blatan is a small country town, which would would not in itself attract-the-for- eigner. But as a "rose town" it can hardly be beaten. Flower parades and flower carnivals are being arranged, in all of which the rose will occupy the central posi- tion. It has been estimated that more than one million roses will be exhibited for sale, and the prices are so low that even the poorest in- habitants can buy hem.
