AUSTRALIAN TARIFF

NEW AIDS TO BRITISH MANUFACTURERS

AN-

British motor-manufacturing firms

with received

astisfaction the nouncement that the new Australian Budget had increased the duty on for- eign manufactured chassis by 10 per eent, without altering the preference on British chassis.

This means that while British unassembled chassis will continue to receive free entry under the preferential tariff, foreign ones will pay a general duty of 27 per cent, as against 17 per cent. hitherto, while British assembled chassis will still pay a duty of 5 per cent, and for eign ones 35 per cent, compared with 25.

Australia annually imports chasals to the value of approximately £10,000,000, of which Britain's shar is about 26 per cent., the United States having the premier position. The additional 10 per cent, on foreign makes will, it believed, help, the British manufacturer to gain a greater hold on the Australian market.
