Speed has always thrilled us. It was speed that fixed the names of the clippers on the imperishable scroll of the sea. Out of the past we re- call the fast packets, the finest ships of their day and, considering them in point of maximum hourly speed, and recording only the carly racers cap- able of 20 knots or over, the ships line up as follows: "Campania," 21, and "Lucania." a little better, begin- ning in 1893, Then we have 3-knotters "La Lourraine," and "La Savole," of about 1900, and the "Espagne" of 1999. The "Oceanic" of that year was a 20-knotter.

Then a feld of willing old girls strained their boilers to the utmost to get within touching distance of the two- score mark per hour. How they struggled across is a matter of his- tory: reciprocating engines, coal-fired. boilers, sweat, dust and cursing.

Brave-Hearted Ships

The four American liners were in that crowd, brave-hearted ships that drove through fair weather and foul to keep up their reputations in the somewhat faster company of their time. In those days Cunard and White Star went to Liverpool, and the "St. Louis" and "St. Paul" to Souththampton, and awaiting them was the London train,

Passengers bound east would meet in London and compare notes as to their arrival. Channel fogs were cut at hazardous speed, all to meet this train on time and save the face, as it were, of their respectability. Then came a a new

This speed jump was a great that talk was in the way of disparaging such performances from the standpoint of economy, vibration and what not, The "France" came out in 1912, steaming 23 knots, and the Humburg-American Line had three gigantic ships on the ways, the "Im- perator," the "Vaterland" and the Bismarck." As we know that theze ships were, really faster, the "Lovia- than," ex-"Vaterland," is now doing 28, if you count fast: So the newar fuel, oil, coming in after coal, and the improvements in turbine engines, were driving the race to the higher speed bracket, where we find it to-day: in the 20 years just past, thu survivor of a great pair of racers, the "Mauretania" has held and improved her pace, beating her own record time in September, 1928, when sho steamed from Cherbourg to New York in 5 days, 2 hours. and 34 minutes.
