.DEPUTY GOVERNOR AS HOST

.

(By "Shart Flead."] In the plethora of reports and articles on the series of Interport lawn bowls it has not so far been ntentioned that the present is the first occasion on which the Governor or the Deputy. Governor has hon- sured the "Big Match" and the In- terport dinner with his presence.

THE CHINA MAIL,

The team representing Shanghai in to-day's match against the Kowloon Bowling Green Club will be Glover (No. 1), Dorrance (No. 2).. Malcolm (No. 3), and. Phillips (Skip).

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was spent, during which generous“ hospitality was dispensed by His Excellency to the players and the party of guests who neted the role of spectatora.

Stil another pleasing departure Glover was, witnessed yesterday afternoon when His Excellency the Deputy Governor was the host at Govern- ment House to the Shanghai bowling learn, an official and an unofficial rink playing the usual 21 heads, respectively. And equally pleasing was the fact that His Excellency himself participated In the game.

This personal interest in the game must exert a powerful' influence in raising the status of lawn bowls In the Colony, great as its advance- ment has been in the inst four or five years. The Shanghai players to a man deeply appreciated this guber- antorial compliment, as did the local Lawn Bowls Association, a number of whose members, with their lady friends, were also privileged to be guests during the afternoon.

The Social Side

*

The gathering so thoughtfully arranged by His Excellency empha- sised more the social than the com petitive side of the pastime, all that concerned the players and spectatora 'being the prospect of a "jolly good 'game" on the trim and neatly laid out Government lawn. The close in- lerest of the Hon. Mr. Southorn was emphasised by the fact that all the accessories of the game-scoring bourds, rink numbers, and so forth -wure fixed in position ДУ од ап ordinary

any of the Clubs. The green played quite well, but it peared to one watching the game that the rink nearer Government House drew much better than the other on which the official game was played. Anyway, it is wonderful what can be done in the way of get- ling "on the jack" on a green that, until a very short time ago, was devoted solely to lawn tennis.

A Word on the Play- Remembering still that nothing was at stake except possibly the likelihood of the first Interport game at Government House resulting in a personal triumph for the Hon. Mr.

Naturally the game on the official rink was watched with the greater interest. With the strain and an- xlety of the Big Match" behind him, it may be said that Malcolm perhaps played his best game during his present visit to the Colony. Phillips was always as dangerous as usual as lead, but if anything he was eclipsed by Reed, who seemed to know every

blade of grass. Jesslman played his ordinary quiet game and Glover made quite a cuc- cessful debut as skip.

Some Perfect Gems- For Government House the Hon. Mr. Southorn has quickly adapted himself

time-honoured to the characteristics and mannerisms of the player who either gets what he plays for (by skill or "josa") or is short -or steamy, as

the caso may be. Some of his shots were perfect gems. Reed has been mentioned already honourably, but Deskin has been scen to better advantage, although now and again he brought off a coup when all acem-

The match was played on the new upper Fati ground, which is a distinct improvement in every way-on the lower Fati ground. The scoring, however, was much slower as the field being large and the grass unclipped, it is practically impossible to hit a boundary, except in one over a high wall, which counts for 6, otherwise everything has to be run and most good, carpet drives instead of scoring a four usually only score one.
