THE

NAVAL STRENGTH

STANDARD TON MEASURE-

·MENTS OF SHIPS

TABLE PUBLISHED

Washington, Ysterday.

The Navy Department has pub- lished the first table of relative British and American naval strength, which compare the two leets on the basis of "standard" tons and gives Britain 1,345,000 tons and the United States 1,294,000 toria.

Under the new figures the United States bases 59,000 tons and Bri- tain 21,000 tons, compare with the last department figures. The De- partment states that standard ton measurements were employed in the recent limitation negotiations.--- Reuter.' American Service.

Practical Disarmament

Tokyo, Saturday. While the vernacular Press welcomes the successful outcome of. the British and American converga- tions, they emphasise that the establishment of British-American parity does not connote a advance towards practical world disarma- ment unlaw all the leading naval Powers are consulted, and an actual;

reductios of all navies is effected.

Fear expressed test the limita- tion resalts in actual expansion which from financial considerations so far as Japan is concerned cannot be tolerated, declares the "Chugai Shogyo" which reflects the general opinion on this matter.

That the Navy shares the same view is indicated by Admiral Takarabe who in an interview with that Reuter recently, intimaled Japan wants an actual reduction, and not merely limitatio, by the establishment of ratios and auxill- ary categories.

The Nival spokesman, comment ing on the likelihood of America proposing the extension of a Naval holiday for capital ships, remarked that Japan is opposed to an exten- &sion in principle, though she might be prepared to agree to the spread of construction over a prolonged period if the commencement of the work of replacement was permitted in 1931 as originally suggested,

It is stated that the United States Government will propose the Naval holiday of 10 years for the construction of capital ships shall be extended from 1931 to 1936 when there should be an op- portunity for a second conference at which bigger steps can be taken toward the reduction of all classes of warships.Feuter's American Service.

HONG KONG TIDE

The tide-table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide-pre- dieting Machine, which includes 40 components for the better prediction of tides, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kowloon tidal observa tory under the direction of Dr. Dobrek during the years 1887, 1888 and 1883.

The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences being very srial.

The times of high and low-water must rut be considered to coincide with the times of slack-water and change of current, the two phenomena being quite distinet.
