fact that in this case there was no opponent, only a partner, as the Competition was stroke-play and not match-play. Still, it is a sound argument that the players in a stroke tournament, are opponents as each is trying to beat the rest.
One of the underlying principles of stroke-play is that each player acts as custodian for the remainder of the competitors, and by reason of the trust, it is his duty to see that the rules of the game are observed, and, in case of breaches, to exact were not done the whole fabric of the appropriate penalties. down to what are the precise duties of a marker. In some quarters it a contended that the marker is merely a clerk, who puts down on the card the score taken at each hole, and that his, or her, duties end there.
If this is so, then it would seem
not that it was sulficient for Compator to intimate his intention only to the marker, and that he should have consulted his "op- ponent," who was the person more directly concerned in the competi
tion. On the other hand, one would
imagine that a marker duly ap pointed by the Committee has other duties to perform than merely re- carding the scores, such as, for instance, taking notice of, and re- porting on, breaches of the rules and any doubtful points of pro- cedure on the part of the competi- interpretation of the duties of a tors. Assuming this is a correct

son, and, in any case, he would be in a position to supply additional evidence on the question as to the ball's fitness or unfitness. How- ever, this is one of the points on which St. Andrews, in due course, will be called upon to adjudicate.
In the event of the authorities
deciding that Compston has incur red a penalty. the paint arises: "What. in such circumstances, is the nature of the penalty? Is it disqualification, or a two strokes' penalty?" There exists a sharp division of opinion on the matter. It is urged by one section that Compston's act entails disqualifica- tion on the ground that, without re- ference to his "opponent," he holed out with a ball other than the one! in play.
But as
no penalty is expressly stated for a breach of Rule 24, it is covered by the "General Fenalty," which states that, "Where no penalty for the breach of a rule is stated, the penalty shall be the loss of the holo." In stroke-play, Rule 14, which is the Rules of Golf (match-play) the cquivalent, says: "Where in the rule of Golf (match-play) the penalty for the breach of any rule is the loss of the hole, in Stroke Competitions the penalty shall be the loss of two strokes.” These knotty points, and because they have never before arison the de- cision of St. Andrews will be await- ed with interest by all classes of golfers.
Caddie Seeks Mushrooms
On the question of the duties of markers in stroke competitions there is an amusing case cited by the Penmaenmawr club. In this instance B was a single competitor, whereupon A played round with him and marked his card. At the end of the round A was observed arriving with a bandkerchief of mushrooms in his hand. Some com- | petitors raised the question of how much attention A could have given to B's play if he were at the same time looking for mushrooms.
