GOVERNMENT ASKS FOR $22,031,479
BILL'S FIRST READING
Important And Busy Day In Council On Thursday
UNOFFICIAL MEMBERS' LONG LIST OF QUESTIONS
Thursday will be an important and busy day in the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Pride of place goes, of course, to the Budget. For 1920, the Government asks (at the first estimate) for $22,031.479 -which is more than 2 million dollars more than the figure sug- gested at the corresponding period last year to meet the 1929 re- quirements. Details and a comparison appear below.
In connection with public works met out of loans, authority will be sought for the approval of estimates and also of amounts actually expended and, furthermore, for the meeting of such outlays from loans already made and those to be floated. Schernes referred to are those of Shing Mun River (water), Harbour Development, Kai Tack Aerodrome (the Colony's share) and Aberdeen (water).
Two Unofficial members have given notice of intention to ask a series of questions relating to Kowloon Point, Homuntin, Mr. R. M. Henderson's water report, and Kowloon Tong.

PREMIER'S U.S. VISIT
Problems Will Be Overcome & Agreement Reached
LABOURS' PLEDGE
Important questions are to be discussed by the 10th assembly of the League of Nations, which was opened by the Persian Prince, Mohamed Ali Khan Farughi, at Geneva yesterday, and on which five Nations are represented.
The fact that Mr. Ramsay MacDonald is representing Great Britain may be regarded as a hopeful augury, since the Premier has declared that both the President of the United States and him- self are out for agreement on naval disarmament and other peace problems which mean as much to the rest of the world as to them. selves. The Premier feels that Britain's signature to the optiona! clause is essential if Europe is to accept arbitration.

No Question of Abandon
Geneva, Later. Mr. MacDonald's statement that he was unable to say whether it was possible for him to go to the United States in the Autumn, is interpreted in some quarters as foreshadowing a possible aban- donment of the visit.
Interviewed by Reuter on this point, Mr. MacDonald declared emphatically that such an impres- sion was wrong. What he meant. was that no definite arrangements had yet been made. There were certain things to be done before definite plans could be made.. "If they are to be done before Parlia- ment meets, they must be done quickly," said Mr. MacDonald. "But they are going to be done, and there is no question of aban- donment."

We are examining every proposal which is likely to bring the conversations to a successful termination.
