ARTFUL STORY

A case of fraud was reported to the Police yesterday by Mr. G. Komor, of Messrs. Komor and Komor, art curin dealers. Last week a Chinese of re- speetable appearance called at the shop and asked for Mr. S. Komor, the principal. On being told that he was: in Japan, the Chinese claimed to be a business acquaintance of Mr. Komor, sen, with a curio shop in Shanghai. The man then told a "hard luck" story of having been robbed at his hotel and wanted a loan to cable his father in Shanghai for money.

Mr. G.. Komor agreed to pay for the tele- Igram whereupon the Chinese wrote one out asking his father for $200. Then he "touched" Mr. Komoy for $3 for a night's lodging and departed.

Subsequently Mr. Komor was notified that the telegram was not delivered be- cause of insufficient address, and then realised that he had been swindled to the extent of $6.60, $2.60 of which was the cost of the telegram.

THE "TALKIES"

PRODUCERS HAPPY: ACTORS PERTURBED

A FUTILE CAMPAIGN

Hollywood, Yesterday, Cheerfulness pervades the stu- dios, but thousands of actors are fearful for their livelihood, as a consequence of a truce between the Actors' Equity Association and cinema producers.

The reason for the seeming

failure of the Association's CAM- paign for a "closed" shop" is not clear.

The Actors Association in July sought to insist that all. "talkie" artistes should be members of the Association, and work under con tracts approved by them. The film producers decided to defy this edict, and the actors raised $10,000 to finance a campaign to organize. "talkie" actors.-Reuter.
