and all the NEWS.

The Weekly paper that saves you the trouble of writing Home.

No relief has come yet in the matter of posting correspondence via Siberia in order to reach Europe quickly, The Suez route, along which all papers from Hong Kong are sent as a part of settled policy, still prevails. There is, there- fore, no object in trying to rush a letter Home. But why. trouble to write at all in this trying weather? If you wish to keep your folks informed as to what is going on in Hong Kong particularly and in China generally, all that you have to do is to send a copy of the "Overland China Mail" for a few weeks.

We are confident that

All we ask is a fair test. senders in Hong Kong will earn the profound gratitude of friends who receive the "Overland" from them. A standing order, we predict, is bound to follow, And this is always a sound way of showing one's thoughtfulness for those in the Old Country..

The "Overland," as is widely known, is the only weekly budget of news published in Hong Kong with pictures and an art supplement included at no extra charge. This week, it gives all the "local" and "China" news and also explains what is happening along the Siberian - Manchurian frontier to cause the delay in mails.

In the whirl of a trying. Hong Kong summer rendered afl' the more unbearable by the "acute shortage of amter, letters to re- latives and friends in other parts of the world frequently fail to be written even by the most ardent correspondents. COLONY'S FINANCES

$10,000,000 BALANCE IS MAINTAINED

REVENUE AND EXPENDITURE

The financial statement of the Colenial Treasury as published in the eurront number of the "Government azette" showed that the balance in hand

totalled April 20 $10,864,756.02.

оп

This is quite satisfactory considering that it was for the first time on March 31 that the Colony's cash balance had reached the ten million mark. The balance was then $10,308,441.24. Expenditure in April amounted to $2,072,017.30 but revenne came to $2,133.332.68,

It is also satisfactory to note that the actual revenue collected up to April 30 this year is $8,140,191.13 as against $7,767,407.18 for the sanie period last yent.

While the revenue showed an increase, the expenditure decreased. Actual expenditure up to April 30 was $5,807,068.43, as against $6,412,766.33 of the same period last year.

"FORTUNE FROM U.S.A.

GERMAN TOWN'S DEBTS AND TAXES PAID

Outside the gates of Berlin a festival was celebrated in mail week which should warm the hearts of those who write the libretti for musical comedies. The getting was the supremely beautiful Spreewald country, the Spree woods-forests eut by so many waterways that the rowing boat is used in precisely the sume fashion as the Venetian gon- dola.

The reason for this festival was such as to satisfy even the most romantica citizen of the little town of Vetschau went to America years ago and has left his native place a very comfortable fortune in dollars. So much, indeed, that, after letting the citizens off taxes this year and paying off the debts incurred during recent bad seasons, Vetschau had sufficient over to ar- exhibition of the native range an produce and feast and dance for three days.

Students of European civilisations still delight in these Wendish villages.and towns which form cases in the of archaeological interest flat wood-and-water country of the Brandenburg plains. The pictures- que costume of the Spreewald in- habitants has survived, it would ap- pear, chiefly through the difficulties of outside communication before the days of the automobile. The mén are fishers; the women of the family have always contributed to ita sup- port.

Owing, it is to be presumed, to the bealthy country life and the survival of the tradition of Rousseau, the wet-nurses of former generations in Berlin were all drawn from the neighbourhood. Later, ordinary

chüdren's

Buzzes adopted the costume.fo-day the voluminous starched white petticoats and large white lace caps are making way even among the most fashionable for the English children's nurse's uniform. But they are still a delight to the eye, if not to the washing bill, and they will never vanish entirely as long as wealthy parvenus look upon a menial clad in such luxury of linen and lace to be an outward and visible sign of prosperity.
