MOSTLY FOR PUBLIC HIRE

Canton, Yesterday. Owing to the rapid development of thoroughfares in Canton, car owners have bought a number of old cars from Hong Kong and put them to hire and have reaped good profit during the year. The issue of car licences is due short- ly. Some of the cars have been submitted for the inspection of the Bureau of Public Utilities and have been rejected owing to their being unfit for public use; many of the licences have been with held until proper repairs have been made. It is authoritatively learned that out of more than 400 cars on public hire, one-third have been rejected.

Telegraph Apparatus The Ministry of Communications has instructed the telegraph offices through the country to adopt standard high speed automatic apparatus. The Ministry has al ready cabled to London for the purchase of these instruments.

In view of the fact that post- age stamps bear the portraits of the rulers in monarchies and those of the presidents or founders in case of republics, the Government of China is understood to have issued instructions to replace the present postage stamps (which are deemed not sufficiently to re- present the evolution of Chinese affairs) by substituting portraits |

Central Bank Notes

As previously intimated, the re- demption of the $1 and $5 notes has been in effect for the last few days, but the public has not taken advantage of it, with the result that there is a surplus of silver in the possession of the Central Bank, which has now de- cided to redeem the $10 before August 25.

OR OF

To solve the financial problema arising out of the depreciation of the Kwangsi notes, the Kwangai Provincial Government has drawn up a defaite scheme for financial re-adjustments. The main feature of the scheme is that bonds will be issued solely for the redemp- tion of the 10 cents notes, while the

bonds themselves will be legal tender for the payment of taxes from the date of issue. As to the $1 notes, the value of each note will be equivalent to 20 cents (Canton currency),

Canton Development After having re-assumed office by order of the National Government, Mayor Lam Wan-koi sent the Kwangtung Provincial Government a detailed scheme for the develop ment of Canton city, an abstract of which is as follows:-

Earlier News

The Financial Commission met for 11⁄2 hours this morning, then adjourned until August. 17. It was stated afterwards that everything is going on amoothly.

It is learned that Mr. Snowden stated towards the end of the sit- ting: "If we adjourn without pub- lishing an explanation, the public | vill think that is a deadlock. We are anxions to remove such an im- pression; and I hope the conversa- tions, which are to be continued, will be fruitful, and that on August, 17 we shall be able to get down to the real question."-Reuter.

Mr. Churchill's Support

Montreal, Yesterday.

Mr. Churchill started his Cana- dian holiday by addressing 1,400 people, including Federal and Pró- vincial Ministers, at the Canadian Club here.

He cordially supported Mr. Snowden's virile stand at The Hagne, saying that he (Mr. Church), when Chancellor, ïmade it clear to M. Poincare, who agreed, that the Spa percentages, should be made the basis of Reparations payments under the Young Plan; also that Britain, should be free to review the various solutions pro posed.
