addressing her woman," Mr. Bob Sawyer drew upon himself the hysterical re- proaches of his landlady in the Borough. There are five women in Western Canada, however, who are so determined that members of their sex shall, for constitutional

not purposes, be described "women," but as "persona," that they are bringing an appeal upon the matter to the Judicial Commit- tee of the Privy Council in London. The question to be determined is whether, under the British North America Act, women are entitled to be considered as, "persons" who are qualined to sit in the Canadian Senate the Upper Chamber of the Dominion Parliament.

The question has been agitating leaders of the Feminist movement in Canada for some ten years." After the War the British North America Act was amended so that women were entitled to vote in elec tions, and to become eligible as members of the House of Commons. The point as to whether women were entitled to be appointed by the Governor-General as members of the Senate remained more or less in abeyance until some three years back. An appeal was then made on the subject to the Supreme Court of Canada. In April of last year this Court ruled that women were not to be reckoned among those "qualified persons" who may sit in the Senate.

Official Attitude

Although the Federal and certain of the Provincial Governments are upholding the negative side of the argument, they have offered no ob- jection to the matter being referred to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. It would have been open to the Dominion Parliament to make auch amendment to the British North America Act as { would have ensured the eligibility of women for membership of the Senate In such an event the amendments would have had to re- ceive the sanction of the Imperial Parliament.

The actual appellants all reside |in ́Alberta. The Hon. Irane Parlby was the first woman in the Empire to become a Cabinet Minister. She was given this rank in the Alberts Legislature in order that she might have the special oversight of wo- men and children's interests. Mrs. Louise McKinney was the first woman to be elected to a Canadian Legislature, and Mrs. Nellie Bic. Clung is known throughout Canadà as a writer and lecturer in the feminist movement. Mra. Alice Jamieson, of Calgary, was one of the two first women in Canada to be appointed to the magisterial bench. Norie of the ladies figuring in the appeal will attend the pro- ceedings before the Judicial Com- mittee.

A FEW EXERCISES.

In these uncorseted days, parti- cularly in an enervating climate, it is not always easy to keep the body. well proportioned. For those who want to reduce their weight, the following exercises, if performed regularly, should work wonders.

The Weekly paper that saves you the trouble of writing Home.

Normal transit of newspapers via the Siberian route has not been resumed This is one of the reasons why the people in the Old Country are all the more anxious to read of latest developments in this part of the world. The Suez Canal route remains and, for the Homeward journey, all Hong Kong papers (except not too big cuttings which go as letters) are sent that way. "Won't you post a copy of the "Overland" to a friend who will be very pleased to read its contents ? The "Overland," as is generally known, is the only weekly news budget published in Hong Kong with pictures. This week's issue tells about "Red Thursday (a predecessor of which was the Communist demonstration outside the Chinese Legation in London) about the improvement in water supplies; about the apathy of the British public towards their own interest in China: about the floods in the North and the disasters in Japan and, in fact, all the "local" and "China" news of the week.

In the umiri of a trying Hong Kong summer rendered all the more unbearable by the acute shortage of water, lettern to relativos: and friends in other parts of the world frequently fail to de written even by the most ardent correspondents. It is a kindly thought t
