OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
CHINA NEWS, LOCAL NEWS
and all the NEWS.
The Weekly paper that save you the trouble of writing Home.
The number of orders from residents at Home received during the last few weeks is excellent testimony to the useful- ness of the "Overland China Mail," the only weekly budget of news published in Hong Kong which has a special coloured picture supplement.
It is always in good time for the mail, via Suez; and it is very welcome. From time to time information is sought, just cut of curiosity, as a matter of business, for social or personal and for inany other reasons. Invariably it is looked forward to week after week by those ex-Hong Kong-ites or old China hands, and by the "folks" of those still sojourning out here.
Bear in mind, the "Overland" cannot be posted via Siberia as a newspaper. nor any other newspaper in Hong Kong as such. But if there is anything urgent, you can as other people, and especially the Hongs have done cut out what you require, paste it on letter paper, and send the matter as a letter or a part of a letter,
This week the "Overland" maintains its high standard of pictures, local" and "China" news, articles, comment, etc.
It is a criterion of something consistently good.
obviously, be better than a descriptive letter.
It must,
The Colony's water problem and the steps taken to solve itain .cupy the position of prominence. And the "Overland" has a special article which sets forth Mr. C. J. Cooke's well-thought out scheme.
Another special is that by "A.H.C." on the fourth Pacific Science Congress, written for the benefit of the layman, and and amusement to the whole world.

CHINESE "BOY" GETS WORST OF FIGHT.
NEIGHBOURS FALL OUT A
The Sousas and the Marshalls, neighbours of Leighton Hill-road, Happy Valley, had been on friend- ly terms until recently, when two adies of the respective families fell out, and they had not been on speaking terms since.
Roland
On June 14 William II (15), the Marshall's nephew, came to blows with the Sousas's Chinese "boy" over their respec- tive dogs lighting. The Chinese, who had the worse of the argu- ment, attempted to strike young Hill with his dog-chain. Mesars. James and Alexander Marshall interfered, and the result was that they were yesterday after- noon summoned before Mr. E. W. Hamilton for assault. The first. defendant said he just tapped" the "bay." but, the latter alleged he was hit hard.
After hearing evidence, Mr. Hamilton said it frequently hap pened in ight between buys that the lasers used brickbats and other missiles to help themselves out. In this case the Chinese by admittedly had the worse of it, and his Worship was satisfied that he did attempt to use the dog-chain on Master Hill. There- fore, the two defendants were en- titled to interfere. The summons must be dismissed.
His Worship added that it was clear that there had been pre- vious trouble between the two families, and possibly the Chinese "boy" knew about the trouble, and was carrying it on his own. Both he and Master Hill were told that they could have been brought up for disorderly conduct as the re- sult of. such fighting. and Mr. Hamilton impressed upon them the fact that there was in Court a Sergeant whose duty it was to weild a useful cane when neces

ARMED ROBBERY
RAID ON FAMILY IN A VILLAGE
A robbery, which occurred early this morning in the village of Hau Tau, has been reported to the Police by a villag- er. Lui Ming Loi, who states that while he was asleep with his wife and family, he heard a knuck at the door.
As he was in the act of rising he no- ticed that seven men had entered the hut, one of whom was armed with a knife.
While the armed man kept him and his family silent, others of the gang stole from a jacket the sum of $25 in notes, and also a pair of ear-rings valued at $10 from the only woman oc- cupant of the hut.

And this evidence again streng- thens the case for the immortality of the soul or the survival by the personality of bodily death:
The results attained (by psychical research) are neither They negative nor negligible.' may best be summarised in the assertion that they place the un- blased inquirer before a dilemma. Either personality is not in all cases utterly dissolved with the destruction of the body or, tele- pathic communication of, a most far-reaching and improbable kind

"Man's Soul Survives" The survival must be that of a modified personality:
Impartial consideration leads inevitably to the view that what- ever of personality may survive must be in many respects different from the personality that was manifested in the flesh. And this, of course, is the popular, the orthodox, perhaps оде might say, the theological view:
Thus the tendency of the newest philosophy and the most critical thought is to emphasise the coo- clusion that "life is not the product or slave of any chemotactic forces, but their maker and steersman,” that man's soul survives the grave, and that the universe is not the result of "blind chance.”
The machine differs profoundly It in all-important respects. does not grow; it is put together If its parts are deranged, it can- not rectify Its working. If any part is destroyed, it cannot re- store it.

Princess Hermine's secretary was astounded when one of his own letters to Kari Hartung was read- "Her Majesty the Kaiserin Hermine has received your letter," he wrote. As the Kaiserin has just paid a big bill for your expenses at Bethel, and has also obtained a situation for you in Berlin, she is surprised to get another application from you.
Her Majesty expects that you will show yourself worthy of her All-Highest recommendation, and if your conduct during the next three months is blameless she will give you the aim you desire as a loan."
