CROSS-CHANNEL

NEW CONFERENCE ON FREIGHTS CALLED

THE

ALLEGED COMBINES.

Dublin-In, a further debate in the Bail, at Dublin, on Cross-Channel ship- ping from the Irish Free State, the Minister for Commerce and Industry suggested a conference to thresh out the question of freights, says the "Journal of Commerce.

It was stated by Mr. O'Dwyer thaly jowing to what he described as unnuces- sarily heavy freights, the cattle trade

ad bren lard-hit.

The rights and privileges othe House were utted by Mr. Joist Good to have been abused by an attrcy by members the British and Arish Beam Packet Co., and its mangger had also been attacked.

Mr. O'Hanlon, who originally intro luecd the met:en dealing with ship ping, asked if the company was Irish or English.

Mr. Good replied that it was an old Dublin company, and was included in the Coast Lines combine. He consider-

its 'Dublin manager, Mr. Barry, as a citizen of whom everyone should be prowd. The company, he alleged, was being attacked because it was a mem- of the Coast Lines, but in these days it was necessary for many busi- nesses to combine.

iver

Continuing, Mr. Good said he con- sidered the lairages at Dublin compar- ed favourably with those at any other perta. Indeed, at Dubin the accom- melation was superior. That being so, why should the pert be held up to odium? It all tended to injure the port of Dublin, and diverted trade to Bei fast. The port of Dublin might pos- sibly be improved, but the same might be said of any sort, and he only urged that criticism should not be damaging. The cattle market at Dublin was an old-established fixture, and if they were building it now it might be place perhaps in a different position, but ibey had facilities there that could not be obtained anywhere else. He did not think if these matters were taken up by the State that there would be any inprovement.
