RECENT INCREASES IN TONNAGE

AND SHIPS --

LIVERPOOL PORT

A large increase in the number and tonnage of ships using the port of Liverpool in March, compared with February, is reported by the Board of Trade in their monthly shipping returns just publishet.

Ships of all, nationalities arriving at Liverpool with cargo in March numbered 386, with a total tonnage of 771,000, compared with 148 of 711,000 tons in February. Depar- tures with

cargo wer 547 ships of 824,000 tons, against 460 ships of 656,000 tons.

ship of 300,000 tons, against 103 315,000 tons. The de- partures in ballast from Liverpoo!

cargo in the foreign trade during March at all United Kingdom ports was 5,048,000 tons, a decrease of 3.5 per cent. As com- pared with March, 1928 The ar- rivals in ballast in the foreign trade aggregated

4,184,000 tons, an in- crease of 58,000 tors or 18.9 per cent. compared with March, 1928,

The net tonnage of vessels that de- parted witli cargo in the foreign trade during March was 6,632,000 tons, an increase of 236,000 tons, or 3.7 per cent.. as compared with March, 1928. The net teandge of the departures in ballar in the foreign trade was 3.216,000 tons, a decrease of 85,000 tons compared with March of the previous year.
