[From Our Own Correspondent.] Amoy, May 28. Another outrage has been per- petrated againet Missionaries, This time it has taken place in Lungyenchow, a city near the west- ern border of South Fukien.

This fervent wish is to-day in the heart of every subject of His Missionaries' residences have been Majesty the King and Emperor.

To-day is the 64th birthday of His Majesty, and if there is a fixed pomp about the ceremony in the observance of this day, it is but to remind us of the peace, safety, and tranquillity which we enjoy under his wise rule.

Hong Kong, no less than other parts of the far-flung Empire, voices its own loyalty and affection in its utterance of a simple but sincere prayer-"God Save the King."

A GALA DAY

This year's celebration of His Majesty's birthday has an added significance. It is mingled with a deep sense of bankfulness, for His Majesty has only recently covered from &

The Colony woke up to a splendid day with a clear sky.

Soldiers in khaki; sailors in their spotless "ducks;" now and then a glimpse of the colourful tartans; the glitter of the bayonets,; coupled with the rushing hither and thither of civilians and their families all pointed to show that something was on foot something out of the ordinary humdrum life in Hong Kong.

Excitement was in the air long before the time set for the cere money to take place at the Cenc- taph. Streams of soldiers were be ing transported from Kowloon and Stonecutters' Island. They march ed briskly to the different places assigned to them to "fall in" for the big parade.

The Inspection

His Excellency the Governor then inspected the Guards of Hon- our after which the order "about turn" was given and the three Guards of Honour stood at ease. His Excellency then took up his position on the harbour side of the

On one side were the picturesque monuments and statues, aprinkled with the foliage of early summer, the beautiful Peak forming a scene background. On the other side was the blue choppy water; the colourful flags of the ships-in holiday attire, and even little dinghys and gampans proudly fluttered gorgeous ensigns of no meaning on improvised masts Even the massive bulldings along the water front lost their work of sordidness. The otherwise unattractive appearance of verandahs were filled with ladies in their fine summer dresses, which

gave them an added charm.

The First Act

Then the big guns again made themselves heard, much to the thrill of the spectators. Another seven rounds were fired, and then another feu-de-joie. Before the rapid crack of the rifles died down, the guns at Murray Parade Ground again shook the air with another seven shells, and the salute of twenty-one guns was brought to a close by the firing of another feu-de-joie.

How It Happened

In a subsequent civil action instituted against L-Comdr. Halahan. for $500,000 "damages," by the owners of the "Irene,” an "act of State" was eaded and judgment given for the gallant officer whose, conduct the Chief Justice said, had received the ap- proval of the Admiralty. Lit. Comdr. Halahan had been delayed in Hong Kong some months, with the action pending, and jumped for joy at the conclusion of the case, shouting "I'm a free man now; I can go Home."
