Tanker Tonnage

In Great Britain and Ireland 302,358 ons were commenced a decrease of about 69,000 tons over the similar figures for the December quarter--and Similar 299,831 tons were launched. figures for abroad are 298,281 tons com- menced, and 214,800 tons launched..

and

A reduction is again shown in the tanker tonnage under construction, the present figures being 47 vessels of 331,411 tons, of which 148,480 tons are being built in Great Britain Ireland, and 53,951 tons in France..

While in Great Britain and Ireland the tonnage of mctorships under con- straction (687,289 toms) is much less than the tonnage of steaviers building, the motorship tonnage being construct- ad abroad reaches 862,292 tons, as com- pared with 610,346 tons of steamers.

The continued progress in the em- ployment of the internal-combustion engine for the larger vessels is indi- cated by the fact that while there are now building in the world 61 motor- ships, each of 8,000 tons and upwards, only 38 stearners of such size are un- der construction.

The position which Lloyd's Register classification retains amongst the societies of the world is demonstrated by the fact that the tonnage being constructed throughout the world under the inspection of Lloyd's Regis- ter reaches 1,685,158 tons, of which 1,078,517 tons are being built in Great Britain and Ireland.

LONDON DOCK ROAD-

The Bill to empower the London County Council and the West Ham Corporation jointly to proceed with the new road and vari- construction of ous road windenings in the vicinity of leading to the Royal Victoria and Docks, came before the Unopposed Billa Committee on the House of Lords recently, when it was passed for third reading, It is a scheme, largely subsidised by the Ministry of Trans- port, and work is expected to be begun

autumn.

The Bill in which the Tyne Improve- ment Commissioners seek a variety of new powers for the better perform ange of their duties in regard to their public undertaking was also passed for third reading.

THAMES MOTOR BOAT SERVICE

Mr. Strauss moved, as an amend- ment, at a meeting of the LC.C., that the question of a supplemental maintenance estimate of £500 in res pect of preparatory work with a view to the establishment of a musi cipal motor-boat service on the river Thames, be referred to the Finance and Highways Committee for con sideration.
