SEA WATER CURE
SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENTS
IN GUAM
FOR TREE PESTS
Washington. The experimental use of sea water in combatting inscet pests and the diseases of coconut palm trees is reported by the Guam Agricultural Experiment Station in a communication to the Department of Agriculture. Sea water was found to be effective in destroying insects which congregated
folds of in the young, unopened leaves and around the leaf hases. African oil palms in- fested with mealy bugs were treated with three applications of five gal. tons each daily for, ten days, which had the effect of ridding the palms of the bugs and arresting the pro- gress of decay. The ground around Coconut palms affected with the dis- ease known as "fire blight" vas treated with a wet salt solution of the same concentration as sea water, and the palms recovered.

"The salt water is thought to have a tonic effect which speeds up the growth to the point where the crown shoot grows faster than the bacterial infection can progresa, said the re- port of the government entomologist, Mr. S. R. Vandenberg.
The Guara scientist also reports SAMPAN CAPSIZES complete control of the coconut-scale by the introduction of the lady-bird beetles (Lindoruslopantha). A calony of these beetles has been shipped from Guam to the Fiji Islands to combat the scale in the coconut palma
there. The Guam station also he experimented on the use of coconut meal as food for horses and pigs, with encouraging results. In horse- feed it has been found possible to re- place from one-third to one-half of the eats ration with coconut meal. United Press.
