CURIOUS OLD CUSTOM. The annual hocktide-or kissing ceremony was religiously observed on April 9, with all its curious ceremonial in the Berkshire Town of Hungerford. The feature is the election of two "Tuttimen," who perambulate the town carrying long staves topped by floral bouquets in the centre' of which is an orange. These "Tuttimen" are empowered by an ancient law to demand a kiss from every female they encoun- ter, or, in default, a fine of one penny. GIVEN BY NAPOLEON The magnificent diamond necklace which Emperor Napoleon I had specially made for Empress Marie Louise, is shortly to be sold by private treaty. The neck- lace, which is composed of 28 brilliants, 10 briolet diamonds and 9 pendant diamonds, was made in 1811. In all there are about. 265 carats of diamonds in it.-(Sport and General).
