In "The Woman on Trial" she is Pola Negri is playing sympathetic fortunate in having the consistent sweetheart roles, interpreting the support of a leading man like Einar good qualities and very few of the Hanson, whose work is extraordi- frailties of all real women, every-marily promising. One can scarcely imagine her making a venture into a mother's paychology without the deft, understanding direction of Stiller with whom characterization

It is one of the strange things that happens in the laboratory of human alchemy known as Holly wood; the place where villains-like Wallace Beery-are turned over night into comedians, where heroes -like Adolphe Menjou-acquire » | Suave flavour or deviltry; where actors become directors and writers become producers.

The film cosmos is constantly re- arranging the scheme of men's careera, patiently seeking to trans- mute dross talents into golden gifts. More often thot it succeeda.

The cast' dla Negri is excep- tionally interesting, in view of the process by which she has been

transluted from

a gorgeous, dazz-

ling vampire, toyer with men's Hearts, into a lovely creature of tenderness and self-sacrifice.

A Quick Transformation

The capricious, fascinating girl of yesterday has become a woman with soul and fortitude. The change: was already apparent in "Hotel Imperial." As a servant girl, Pola could enchant a great general, but only for the heartfelt purpose of patriotism and single love.

"Barbed Wire" witnessed a fur- ther metamorphosis. Therein the actress interpreted the pacifistic. instinct of all women, whose men go to war, all women who cry out their borror of bloodshed and hate

and needless destruction, women whose love instincts are not halted by the geographical boundaries of

country.

The truly significant change in the star's dramatic cycle is said to be contained in her latest picture "The Woman on Trial" directed by Mauritz Stiller.

EPIGRAMS

We are indebted to the theatrical correspondent of the "Dally Mail" for the following examples of epigrammatic wit and biting satire from Mr. Reginald Berkeley's play "The Lady with a Lamp" which is drawing al London to the Garrick Theatre:--

GLADYS COOPER'S ACTING IN MOVING STORY

SUPERSTITION BOGEY

There were moments in "The Sacred Flame," as we saw it at the Playhouse, says London dramatic critic, which were almost unbearably acute for hardened first-nighters.

One of these cams in the first act-a long but extraordinary well-sustained piece of perfect acting between Gladys Cooper and Richard Bird-the latter as the hopelessly maimed airman, hus- band of a wife in the full bloom of her attractive womanhood.

There was another in the second act when Gladys Cooper was, this time, confronted with the rest of the company by the accusing, effi- elent and yet evidently broken- hearted Nurse Wayland of Clare And Eames (a great study). there was yet another in the third -but to emphasise that would rob the play, not of its interest in- deed, but of a secret of the drama- tist, which ought to be preserv-

ed.

Reception Overwhelming

This

play of Somerset Maugham's has had a great suc- cess in New York with several of the same cast. Now that Gladys Cooper has entered it and brought it to London, it should defy the superstition that what New York likes London will not. The recep- tion was overwhelming.

Three of the cast have been mentioned; they all should be, but at least Mary Jerrold's "mother" and C. V. France's old friend of the family will not be forgotten for a long time.

FATAL SEIZURE DURING TEHEARSAL

A dress rehearsal of the new comedy, "Afraid of the Dark," at the Theatre Royal, Brighton, was interrupted by the sudden death of one of the actors, Winnington Barnes. He was playing the part of Fanshaw, a crook, when he had. a sudden seizure and fell dead.

Mr. Barres, who was about 55 years old, was well known for his interpretation of robust roles, not only in Britain but in many parts of the Dominions. He was for some time an officer in the Bri- tish Mercantile Marine.
