"CHINA COMMAND"
CHANGE IN BRITISH MILITARY ADMINISTRATION
SHANGHAI & TIENTSIN AREAS
As from April 18, the South China Command (with headquarters in Hong Kong) became the China Command. H.E. the General Officer Commanding, South China (Major- General J. W. Sandilands, CB, C.M.G., D.S.O.) becomes, of course, H.E. the G.O.C., China.
A Reuter cable from Shanghai reads:The headquarters of the North China Command ceases to exist as from April 16 on the de- parture of the rest of the Head- quarters staff for Hong Kong, leav-| ing two battalions and Brigade Headquarters in Shanghai."
There are now two British. infan- try battalions in Hong Kong and also other an Indian battalion, units.

During the Great War, owing to exigencies, there
no North China Command, the G.O.C. Hong Kong having charge of the "China Command" as is the case now. After the War the two com- mands were maintained separately. Then, during the crisis, came firstly the Shanghai Denfence Force (with about 15.000 troops) and subse- quently the extension of the Shang hai Defence Force to include Bri- tlah trugps in North China, under the North China Command,

INDIAN AIR MAIL
HAILED AS AN HISTORIC EVENT
MERELY A PRECURSOR
London, Yesterday. The successful inauguration of the Indian air mail is kailed by the newspapers as an historic event in the annals of Imperial com- munications, marking the definite beginning of scheduled air services rivalling those on land or sea.
A great impression has been created by Sir Samuel Hoare's re- marks:
"A few days ago I was sleep- ing al fresco, and was awaken- ed by the grunting of a hip- popotamus and the howls of hyenas. Anybody may now leave London, shoot a ilon in Africa, or a tiger in India, and be back in London in a little over a fortnight."

Shasi, Yesterday,
A large number of pro-Kwangsi troops under General Hu Tsang-tu (who is retreating from Hankow, westward, up the Yangtsze) passed through Shasi (287 miles above Hankow) to-day, still marching up river and wheeling southwards into Hunan province.
It is reported that pro-Nanking gunboats has been in action (with the retreating Kwangsi-itea) below Shasi-British Naval Wireless.

London's Pre-eminence London, in spite of the sacri fices made by Great Britain during the war, had regained its solid international prominence. We wore still the greatest interna- tional market and we had been able to maintain money rates low- er than those which normally pre- vailed in New York, while bills of exchange on London, which after the war, were so seriously menac Fåd, had in the last few years re- gained their time-honoured post- tion as the favourite international instrument and token of commerce, There had been a decline in the cost of living as a result of our allegiance to sound money. This decline of 18 points meant an in- crease in the purchasing power of wages equivalent to the remission of £160,000,000 a year în indirect taxation. :
