the Gladiators' centre forwards of the ball. and dribbling it to the latter's goal, put the "rubber" be tween the bricks with a job shot goalie could

not reach.
The Gladiators argument is that. if the Fortuguese had not interfered, they would certainly have scored a goal, and, alterna- tively, that the, shot was too high and against all rules of street soccer which is different from Association soccer in that there are no cress-bars to the goals and consequently the ball has to be kept
low.
The referees stuck to their guns, however, and it is understood that the Gladiators will put in a pro- test to the officials of the league,
and also address the C.S.F. on the crying shame that no policeman. was detailed, for duty to keep in- truders from the playing ground in such an important match.
RUGBY FOOTBALL
FINAL IN TRIANGULAR TOURNAMENT
NAVY BEAT CLUB
As was anticipated, a keen and hard fought game was witnessed on the Club ground yesterday, when the Navy defeated the Club by 19 points to 16, in one of the best "Rugger"
games seen this
season,
With a lead of 16 points to nil in the first half, the Club were defeated largely owing to a magni- ficent recovery of the Navy team. who showed excellent combination in the second half, and brought the score level within the last, five minutes of the game. Soon after a free kick was awarded to the Navy from which they scored and thus won the match.

Congratulations!

On the other hand the ex-cham- pion's shots were coming off, the ball keeping just within the pre- scribed limits. That encouraged him, and, playing with dash and confidence, he took the second set easily.
In spite of the counter attrac- tion at Happy Valley, where the Navy and the Club were fighting for the Sim Rugby Shield, a large number of spectators gathered to see the famous Rumjahn cousins in opposition. On the whole it

match. Those who had seen H. D. account
Although H. D. took the first for M. K. Lo and Lim, the Uni-two games of the third set one had the feeling that three sets would determine the issue. S. A. showed no mercy to his doubles partner and played a forcing game. So also did the younger man..but no matter how cleverly H. D. placed the ball, whether in the back corners or just over the net, S. A's amazing speed and power of recovery enabled him to get to practically every ball. On the other hand, H. D. seemed to be come rather lazy or nonchalant. He could have got to several of his opponent's chop shots had he bothered. It looked as if he knew that the match was his cousin's so why kill himself in useless chasing?
Superb mastery of intricate shots from the racquel of John Van Ryn, young Davis Cup candidate, blocked "Big Bill Tilden's efforts to re-enter fennis competition by beating the vet in straight sets in indoor invitation tournament at Branklyn, NY.
A hard hitting match with vie tory going to the more accurate and more energetic player.

Mid-Winter Golf Tourney
These photographs were taken on the beautiful Colwood Golf Course, Vietorin, B.C., where the first Empress Hotel mid-winter golf tournament for the E. W. Beatty challenge trophy, were held during the week of February 18. These pictures give some idea of the summery aspect of Victoria's mid-winter weather. The hard- wood foliage is shed in the fall as elsewhere, but there is a wealth of evergreen at Victoria to make sufficient moisture to spoil a round
the fairways attractive and at no time during the winter is there
ar to ruin the greens if played "over.
