FISHER FOLK FAIL TO RENEW LICENCES
Fisher folk from Taipo made an op- pearance before Commander G. F. Hole. R.N. (retired) at the Marine Court this morning in answer to a charge lodged by Lance Sergt. Mitchell of failing, as masters of their fishing vessels, to ronow their licences. Defendants, who numbered eight, all pleaded guilty, and were fined $0 each (about twice the amount asked for renewal of licence),
The prosecution mentioned that de- fendants were all arrested in Tulo harbour, Taipo' district.
TARGET PRACTICES
Target practices will be carried out in the vicinity of Mirs Bay on April 9 and 10, and vessels are requested to note the following danger zones:
April 9-Danger area bounded by lines from position "A" 1,000 yards 090 deg. from Bluff Head to a posi tion 2 miles 060 deg. from Bluff Head to, a position 3 miles 090 deg from Channel Rock, to Channel Rock to a position 1,000 yards 360 deg. from Ocean Point and thence tc position "A".

10. Danger Area---Tolo Channel and that part of Mirs Bay within the sector bounded by lines 950 deg. from Bluff Head and 090 deg. from the summis of Wintz Hil (Grass Island) both to a distance, of 4 miles.
Shipping is warned to keep clear of these areas on these days.
A patrolling vessel will be station- ed outside the danger area and will fly a red Bag from half an hour be- fore firing commences until the com- pletion of each individual practice.
SHIPPING BREVITIES
Owing to the extreme shallowness of the water on the West River, the 3. "Tai Ming" arrived in port 24 hours late, coming in yesterday in- stead of on Wednesday as was schedul- ed.
The s... Morosa" entering the harbour on Wednesday, reports that a fireman died during the voyage and his body was buried at sen. The cause of death is unknown.
Captain Smith of the 8.5. Yat" was admitted to the Government Civil Hospital with a slight illness, which, however, was not serious. He was out again last night to take the vessel up to Canton again.

THE PRESENT POSITION
That the present position in the British shipbuilding industry is, on the whole, fairly satisfactory may be gathered from a perusal of the "An- Qual Summary of the Mercantile.

This arrangement was discussed in New York and Britnin last year, when Mr. N. Ohtani, the Managing Director of the N.Y.K., made a round-the-world trip, accompanied by Mfr. Y. Naga shima, Manager of the Passenger De. partment, of the Tokyo Head Office.
The NY.K., with its fleet of 150 vessels of 886,000 gross tans, operates services on alt all the principal cean trade routes, except between the East Coast of the United States and Europe, where the Cunard Line main tains its splendid trans-Atlantic pas senger service. Hence, the alliance of these two great, world-renowned of steamship companies will greatly en- hance the facility of their respective through passenger traffic aerosa the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

The returns for 1928 show that 97 vessels of between 5,000 and 10,000 tons each, and 16 vessels of 10,000 tons and upwards, were launched-in The largest of these this country. ships were the turbine steamere "Duchess of Bedford" (20,123 of York" (each of 20,022 tous), "Duchess of

Ex- cluding vessels of less than 1,000 tons, 51 ships, making together 300,348 tons, and destined for the carriage of oll in bulk, were launch- ed during the year under review. It may be pointed out that
out that the tonnage of steamers fitted for burning fuel launched during 1928 amounts to over $10,000 tons, and that the to- unge of oil-tank ships represents 21 per cent, of the total tonnage of the steamers and motorships launched dur- ing the year. It is interesting to find that the average tonnage of steamers and motorships launched during 1928 is 3,458 tons. If, however, the vessels of less than 500 tons be excluded. the average is increased to 4,666 tone ao against 4,193 in 1927, 4,468 in 1926, 1,439 in 1925, and 3,777 in 1924,

The marine steam turbine has made further progress during 1928. The vessels launched which will en ploy this method of propulsion num- ber 15, and total 108,094 tons, should be noted that the four largest vessels launched in this country dur- ing the year will be fitted with steam turbines. Moreover, the figures just quoted include the "Viceroy of India, in which the turbines operate in con« i junction with electric motors, and two vessels of 7,777 tons, which employ combination of steam turbines and reciprocating engines.
