Now that the cold and dark even- ings are with us, distant wireless reception really comes into its own. This last week we have been get-ernment ingwonderful strength coupled with quality from Cologne, Lan- genberg, and Radio Toulouse, to mention but a few. This popular French station has now been on the air for about 131⁄2 years, and despite the several crises which have overtaken broad- casting in France, has carried on regularly without a day's inter- ruption since starting transmission In the early part of 1925. At present it is supported by eight general councils representing the neighbouring communes, by nearly 200 agricultural societies, by the Federation of French South- Western Radio clube, and by the voluntary subscriptions of some thousands of local

listeners.

This shows the keen interest manifested in broadcasting--when "St. Lols Blues" (Handy), the programmes are devoid of any "Chimes," suspicion of "evening-class" education-in this far-off corser of the Continent.

The transmitter is rated at 5 kilowatts, and there should be no dificulty in receiving the station at good strength in many parts of this country.

If Radio Toulouse is weak, we should look to our serial and now Is the time to give it a spring clean, for a good aerial is quite an im- portant aid in long distant re- ception. The receiver may give under these conditions a moderate performance, but if it does one half of what a properly calculated and efficiently installed aerial system would do, it is per- forming miraculously.

Even if we erect a high and costly system, and take pains with the earth, we can nullify our efforts by taking both leads round the picture rail inside the room to the set, an actual instance that was recently observed. Here the listener had spent a good deal of money in getting the aerial as far as possible from the earth outside the house, yet inside the leads were

Remarkable success has already attended their efforts, and Viscount Byng of Viny, the Commissioner, and various high officials who have всед the results have expressed their approval of the venture.

This application by the polico of the latest outcome of electrical research will in time have effects of far-reaching importance in the prevention and detection of crime and the thwarting and capture of criminals.

Present Method

At present the description of a wanted man is sent either by post

or

telegraph to various police forces, and frequently the details are of a somewhat vague character; but, however.informative a descrip- tion may be, it obviously lacks the completeness of a reliable photo- graph, and it does not the vivid mental picture which is so helpful to every policeman.

convery

One photograph with which an experiment was made was that of Browne, who, with Kennedy, murdered Police Constable Gut- teridge, and the transmission was so good that the wirelessed picture Was easily identified.

Finger- prints of famous criminals have also been transmitted with equal success.

It may be a long time before there is a chain of police wire- less stations in England, but officials are certain that they can already transmit to stations in America and on the Continent, and thus supply the police of various the photographs countries with and fingerprints of fugitive gangs of international thieves and others whose arrest is desired.
