WORLD UNDER-TONNAGED
"The polloy of reserving com mercial activity of private busi- ness, as it applies to shipping, has been promoted by the United States Government with "even greater intensity during the past twelve months than ever since the days before the Civil War, Of the vast fleet of merchant vessels which remained in the possession of the Government at the conclu slon of the war emergency period, only 721 ships. are still under the Government controb This means simply that hundreds of vessels have been transferred to private owners."
In the past six years more than 400 vessels controlled by the Bhip- ping Board have been sold for scrap, and at the moment of write Ing the Board is preparing to scrap 45 others. All the ships. thus eliminated were of typen undesir able for competitive trade, and it was believed that disposal of them would work an advantage for abip ping conditions generally, Dave- lopments seem to have justified this convlation, and I feel confid- ent that other shipowning agencies will sooner or later foresee the wisdom of clearing the seas of ob-! solete vessels to make room for further progress. In modern ship development.
